I hope someone sues him and pushes this to the Supreme Court.

The court has already in the past said you can't use speech to incite a breach of peace, Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire (1942).

The fact that the mock trial and burning was recorded and broadcast, shows that it was an attempt to incite a breach of peace.

Had he done it in private, as a personal act on his property, it would be protected under the law, but to have the whole mock trial and broadcast it on the internet. He knew exactly what he was doing and knew exactly what kind of reaction it would provoke.

If I were the families of those who were killed in response to his actions, I would sue him and his church

See the "most hated family in america" post and you will see breaching the peace has taken a serious fall in our society..............................

Something is only a big deal if people make it a big deal ...

Yes .. it's freedom of expression ... for all anyone cares .. he could have made an underwear out of the quran and wore it like superman ... who cares ..??

The media gave this looney tune so much attention that it became an international incident ..
They should have just ignored him .. then the incident would have just passed as an isolated event by some jackass in a village ...

So many people do these things all the time .. why did he get the attention ..?

I think the original post was not really ambiguous or veiled. But to elucidate with my post I suppose, yes, I do dislike the islamic religion. I live and work among working class muslims. I happily ineract with them. I do not hate them as people. But the way they translate their religion into real life is anything but ordinary. Myself, being a christian, am very easy, tolerant, exceptant(I cannot find the right word there) but among what I would class as moderate muslims there is always an undercurrent toward a physical answers to most questions. Foe myself. I would put this down to being raised in this society. My father was very racist but I swore I would try to be above that and except people as I find them. But sometimes this is very difficult especially since my black neice is marrying a Jehovahs witness. Now there's a dilemma. A strict christian sect. His church is ostracizing him from his freinds and family. I cannot get my head round them either.

There are lots of reasons why we have intervened in the Middle East and beyond. Some do involve liberation and social progress, but others involve realpolitik.

Hegemony, "empire" is security and stability, e.g. Pax Romana and Pax Brittanica.

Think of it as a compromise not a surrender. We have to look at the bigger picture and reality. Its really a struggle between idealism and utilitarianism. We have to find the golden mean between the two. If we swing too far into the ideal, we live in a fantasy world which will lead to our self destruction.

If we no longer have a security arrangement with an Arab Union, then they become a potential problem and an arms race will ensue. We have to make sure they depend on us.

it is wrong, it is called inciting violence and it is a crime in the uk. If a radio producer says the president should be killed and some loon goes and kills him then he has played a role in their murder. As a pastor he has a public duty and as a pastor he should no better. Is this man preaching love...no
The man is an attention hoe

So what is to stop someone from saying oh... picking your finger with your left pinkie offends me and is against my personal beliefs to the greatest extend, and anyone who does incites me to violent murderous rampage and shares responsibility for anyone I kill?

That's flawed logic, in reality a preacher burned a book and a bunch of angry Muslims killed the closest foreigners they could find. Using that logic, this whole war and the guy you talk about here in the very next post...

...is completely justified, but I bet you don't think so do you?

So you only apply it to the situation when it suits you, that's called a bias.

Nobody was talking about ' killing ' anyone in this situation, those actions were thought of by another people.
the analogy suggest murder but the scenario of the book burning does not.

Love ? well, looking at the big picture i would say yes!

love is definitely a motive in this scenario. the idea was to reveal the koans true intent , and with the hopes of having mens eyes opened.

yes there was a chance people would be sacrificed, but for the safety of thousands upon thousands who would have otherwise turned to a religion of hate and violence for truth and peace which is non-existent there.

I would like to suggest that all of you freedom hating Americans who want to supress the freedom of speech move here to Europe and live with your Socialist friends here under a 68% tax burden. And we freedom loving Europeans move over to the US and take your place, so that we can enjoy freedom of speech, deal or no deal?

As long as it is your own books, you can burn, eat or urinate on them as much as you please!

Those that would have us outlaw freedom of speech/expression would also have rape victums stoned, gays killed and any one not bowing to Islam put down.

I think these two videos say it better than I ever could............
