Just a hunch, but when they mention those characteristics, they're talking about actual extremists. For example, let's say someones telling you about the characteristics of OCD (Obsessive–compulsive disorder), one of which could be excessive hand washing or nail biting, they're not saying people who bite their nails or wash their hands, even frequently, are mentally ill, but it may be a symptom and a sign of illness. Do you understand this point I'm trying to make?
