"This eruption is directed right at us, and is expected to get here early in the day on August 4th," says astronomer Leon Golub of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). "It's the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time."

It appears to be a farside event thus far.

Because C-class Flares don't harm us.
M class flares tend to knock out satellites and stuff, but X class flares pose the greatest danger to us. X class flares have the potential to wipe out our electrical grid, celluar communication, etc.
So far, this explosion is producing C Class only from everything I've read.
Meh it seems to be just a C class flare...
Had 3 a couple of days ago.
Since I obviously have zero credibility, here's the answer you want:

flares are irrelevant to this the CME is what we're worrying about.
Coronal mass ejections are often associated with other forms of solar activity, most notably solar flares, but a causal relationship has not been established. Most ejections originate from active regions on Sun's surface, such as groupings of sunspots associated with frequent flares. CMEs occur during both the solar maxima and the solar minima of sun activity, albeit with decreased frequency during the minima.
The most obvious difference between a solar flare and a CME is the spatial scale on which they occur. Flares are local events as compared to CMEs which are much larger eruptions of the corona.

lol you should be worried this is the biggest one in awhile, what's freaking me out also is that usually as soon as these flares pop up they're immediately recorded by spaceweather.com or the stero/soho/sdo solar observatory satellites and observatories.
judging by the size i'd say it'll take 24 hours from the explosion

JAKARTA (BNO NEWS) -- A powerful earthquake struck off the Indonesian island of Java on early Monday morning, seismologists said, prompting a tsunami warning for some local regions.
The 7.1-magnitude earthquake at 3.06 a.m. local time (2006 GMT Sunday) was centered about 279 kilometers (173 miles) south-southwest of Tasikmalaya on Java. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to Indonesia's seismological agency.

I'm in Columbus Ohio, EST, USA, so is Jakarta already in Monday now? (It's still daytime here).
Does this mean this quake has just happened?
Oh sorry, now I sound stupid after I read more.edit on 3-4-2011 by Illustronic because: (no reason given)

If it was headed directly at us, wouldn't it look like a round object getting larger from the center? Not like its jutting off to the side? Mind you, I don't study these things. If someone could correct me if I'm wrong, it would be much appreciated
