The Russians are coming!

Sure wish I had been the broker for this one! Imagine the commission! It's a new world for Russia, isn't it? They've re-defined the term "Super Rich."

"A Russian billionaire investor paid $100 million for a French chateau-style mansion in Silicon Valley, marking the highest known price paid for a single-family home in the U.S.

The purchase of the 25,500-square-foot home in Los Altos Hills, Calif., underscores the strength of some luxury properties in an otherwise depressed housing market.

This The buyer, Yuri Milner, 49, who heads Digital Sky Technologies and whose investments include Facebook Inc., Groupon Inc. and Zynga Inc., had no immediate plans to move into the home, said a spokesman."

Globalization my friends!

Fools and their money are soon parted.

It's a shame he can't give it to those that need it instead of purchasing the brick and mortar of a place that he probably will never visit. So much waste in this world!

Agreed.

100 Million could feed several 3rd world countries for a very long time.

But if he'd just give away his money, the masses wouldn't be able to look up to people with lots of money and go "aaaawh, I wish I had that kind of money to spend on car/house/women - Look at how much 'better' rich folk are...I wish I had that kind of money".

OP, no offense, but that is how I picture all those who praise money.

And Therein lies the problem with the human race !!

How do we, as a species get everyone to minimise Greed and use any 'surplus' of wealth for the greater good ?!!?

If there is a solution out there then I would be very interested to hear it !!

I think Bill and Melinda Gates are a very good example of planned giving. Their foundation gives away billions of dollars to some extremely good causes.

Gates said yesterday he isn't going to leave his money to his children one day, either. He said it would probably hurt them more than help them.

Ok, then go make 100 million and send it to those 3rd world countries. Meanwhile stop telling other people to do with their money.

you regular americans(low income to 2% super rich) act like the goods you purchase arent made in other countries.
are the decisions you make regarding your purchases pertaining the cold war? if russia didnt industrialize their modern sectors so fast and provided goods worth purchasing i doubt you would have an issue buying.

You make a good example there with Mr & Mrs Gates........... it's almost that they saw 'the light' a few years ago when they started up their foundation.....

Trouble is though that for every 'Bill Gates'' doing the morally right thing there are x 100 Russion Billionaire types whom do not share the same philosophy perhaps?

Billions? And you believe this? I'm sure you can learn a lot about questioning their "charity".

Billions could fix the hunger problem in a truckload of nations.

What you don't seem to realize is, is that it is not profitable, for them, to do that. Even if they wanted to give billions there is no way they would be allowed to. Those billions will be seeped off of until there is VERY little left. Heck, you could try and give away surplus food to a starving nation and you still wouldn't be allowed to because "it would meddle with the economy".

Case in point; Japan wanting to donate their rice surplus for free to African nations but being called back by the WTO because, as stated above, it would mess with the economy in those countries.

Impossible. There would be hitmen chasing him one way or another. But I'd guess you wouldn't believe that. What with all the greed and everything...

I read the article, and that man made over a billion dollars in 20 years.

Was the purchase over top? Yes

Could he have helped other people with that money? Yes

But only when I'm capable of earning a billion dollars in 20 years, will I judge the man for the way he spends his money.

And please stop telling people what to do on their posts.

Seriously, how did that comment invest anything interesting to the discussion? Basically, you were just trying to spread a little love this morning, right?

Um, yes. I do believe this. As for 2009 the Gates family foundation has an endowment of 33.5 US BILLION dollars.

What, is everyone just grumpy around here this morning?

Another man who should have eaten his Wheaties this morning.

I'm all for capitalism.

You don't even know me.

Why would you assume that I'm a socialist?

Couldn't be further from the truth.

I'm a capitalist with a conscience, though. I'd be more like the Gates-----and do some really amazing things for the world.

What hell are you talking about? My post wasn't even directed at you. If it was you would've known it because I would've pressed the "Reply To" button before I posted like I did this time.

I was just stating, to no one in particular ( I can do that can't I?) that I was impressed with the amount of wealth he amassed in a relatively short period of time. And until such time that I can do the same, I'm not going to judge someone too heavily for what they do with their fortune.

Myself, I'd probably buy a whole bunch of islands scattered across the globe. Why? I don't know exactly, but it sounds like fun and I sure as hell wouldn't invest any of my money in California. Helping other people around the world on that scale would never work anyway. Too many people that don't want it to happen

that house is ridiculous.....you would need a building manager, security company, a whole crew of cleaners and gardeners, you would probably need a maintenance person maybe two, Cooks, servants, and even a receptionist.
