Really? People are supporting this nonsense?????

The CIA has been caught many times running/protecting drugs coming into our nation, then they criminalize our people for using them, and this is ok?

This will not help anything except his vested interests in the testing company, people will turn away from greens which stay in your system over a month, and they will turn to the harder stuff and chemicals which are out of your system in 3 days or less, wtf

test for alcohol as well, it's way worse than some of the other stuff that will be tested for.

I agree with legalizing them, but for now it is illegal, and it will open up many good positions in the state government for many good people to take advantage of.

I see it as an opportunity for a house cleaning.

And here we go. The government will not rest until ALL PEOPLE ARE DRUG TESTED and it is MANDATORY. Don't you pro-testers get it? This is the next step.

I dont really like Scott for my governor to be honest. He killed our high speed rail system that many, many people in this area have been calling for for years. But that being said, I dont really mind this. Ive know plenty of people on welfare, unemployment, etc. who do spend some of that money on buying drugs. To me, if you need help you should spend it on the stuff that you actually need and not something to get a buzz. Same goes for alcohol and smokes. That money should be going to food, clothing, water and shelter for you and your family and not to things to catch a buzz.

You think it's okay to take away the rights of people who you think are less than you.

You also think it's okay for this politician to collude with a private corporation for his own monetary gain.

All of these politicians who favor drug testing ANYONE, should be the first people drug tested. Test Obama too, he looked kind of high during his speech this week. Plus, he has a history of illegal drug use, by his own admission.

This has turned in to an interesting debate from legalizing drugs to the validity of drug testing welfare recipients and state employees. However, my real concern was with the corruption that seems to be omnipresent in government these days.

There is evidence of massive conflict of interest in this case that can potentially make the Governor, his family and friends vast sums of money.

This to me is the type of welfare that really needs to be addressed, the transfer of taxpayer money to those that are already incredibly wealthy, and the positive reinforcement if immoral, and often, criminal behavior by the so-called "elite".

I and my SOs would have used it; the I-4 corridor from Orlando to Tampa is absolute hell with respect to traffic. I have relations that have homes in Florida -- they regret voting for the guy -- according to one of the state's newspapers, their governor has been dismantling regulations protecting Florida residents at breakneck speed.

I will leave a little bone thug and harmony for this discussion...
Wake up WAKE UP it's the first of the month, so cash your check
and come on!!!!!!!

You can get around 250-400 dollars worth of crack depending
on how big your welfare check is which is about a weeks worth
for some!
Scott hit the nail on the head drug test them!!!!!!!
People in the private sector have to worry about
getting hit with a random at ANY time...

It's nobodies business what people do with their money. If you give someone money for their birthday do you control how they spend it? No you don't. Why? Because when you GIVE it to them it is THEIRS. The government is the problem not the solution. Less government is the key to most of our problems today.

It's not a good thing because it's expensive and the results will not justify the effort.

In other words, it's the work of the American Fascist Party...oops..I mean Tea Party.

you wouldn't like it if you boss told you your paycheck should go to milk, food, and shelter. or he said your pay should go to malt liquor, casino gambling and internet hookers.

this is just to humiliate, control and save money. many people addicted to drugs, would fear the drug tests and not even bother applying. they'll cut welfare payrolls and look like heroes.

or fail the tests and get kicked off. saving more money.

then what. i'll tell you what, they'll end up sticking a knife at your grandmothers throat while she's on her way to buy milk.

no one wins with this policy. i think welfare should be increased not only for the ones who truly need it, but to keep addicted people who are not thinking straight from getting desperate and committing violent crimes.

in the long wrong it actually saves money and makes society safer.

The reason why its a bad idea to drug test all welfare recipients is simple. Its also the reason why Rick Scott is wanting to do this...it will literally cost the state of Florida TENS OF MILLIONS a year. Thought we were trying to save money? I guess if its a GOP pet project it's okay to flush cash down the toilet.

I can't believe how poorly thought through this idea to drug test welfare recipients is - what is the purpose? Is it to eliminate those who take drugs from receiving welfare, presumably to stop as some have said 'wasting' taxpayers money? But hey hang on - Welfare recipients are at the bottom of the income heap - so what happens when you withdraw their welfare? If they can't get a job then logically they die - but of course that aint gonna happen because all they will do then is go into survival mode - they will rob, pillage and plunder whatever is necessary to ensure they can feed themselves and stay alive - which of course burdens the tax payer funded Police Force - ah but when they are caught they will be sent to jail I hear you say! Yes, the jail within which it costs three times as much to the taxpayer to keep people in confinement than it does to pay them welfare. So anyone who advances this argument from the point of view of saving the taxpayer money is barking up the wrong tree - it will cost the taxpayer significantly more. So let's ask again - what is the purpose? To make one fat cat Politician's family even wealthier than it is now. Just as the OP points out.

It's criminal - and you are the victim.

This is the point I was attempting to emphasize.

Governor Scott, as an example of the current environment in politics, is trying to push an agenda because he will profit directly from it. Not because it is good or bad policy. (Which is obviously debatable if one reads the posted commentary.)

Governments are in an all out attack mode against the poor and middle class, so they suggest this or that solution to the budget crisis which will cut services and entitlements.

My problem is that they are transferring the taxpayer wealth to themselves!

It is no different than welfare, only the tax dollars are dolled out to individuals, corporations and banks who, in the most part, do not pay a significant amount of taxes, and in every case, are extremely wealthy to begin with.

Simple - if you "take" money from the government - Free Money that is given to you - Money you did Not make yourself = Welfare Money - you need that money for food and shelter- NOT DRUGS.

I think the idea is good and support it.

The folks that are using the welfare money for the needed things like food and shelter have no fear of that money being taken away. Those that are Abusing The System are the ones that will be in trouble of not getting their Free Handout.

Why is it that congress and everyone in our government is exempt from taking mandatory drug test? This same congress infringed on our 4th amendment rights by passing laws that gave employers permission to drug test employees, gave courts the right to order mandatory drug testing on individuals not yet convicted of a drug crime or, better yet ,drug testing on those whose charges had nothing to do with drug charges. They passed these laws and yet they do not have to follow them? Think about it, someone who is seeking employment as a janitor is drug tested and a person we trust to be president is not. What is wrong with this picture?? I have been trying for several years to get a movement together to demand everyone that runs for office and is appointed to an office be drug tested. This is only logical. Once again congress double standards. will be as long as we let them get away with it.

It may sound like a good idea, but do you want to pay for those drug tests? Either way you would, either your paying for those drug tests directly, or you are paying for those drug tests through the welfare checks these people get.

Either way you are paying for these drug tests, and is that a good use for your taxpayer dollars? Would you want to pay for a drug test for someone who isn't doing drugs? Wouldn't that be a waste?

I don't know how anyone who considers themselves a freeman/woman can be okay with drug tests.

Welfare is a abused by many and I wish something can be done about it. Drug testing is not the answer. I don't think anyone should receive cash assistance for life from tax payer money. Food stamps are okay because they can only be spent at a grocery store and only on food items. I'm okay with housing projects for the under privileged and I like bus ticket vouchers for those who need it. If someone has food stamps, shelter, and transportation what else could they possibly need? Giving someone money for nothing is wrong and causes a lot of problems.

Drug testing welfare recipients will help anything or anyone. As I stated before most drugs are undetectable after a few days except pot which shouldn't even be illegal. Prescription drugs are the number one drugs abused today most addicts have a prescription so they won't have to worry about failing. Also most people who are on public system for life know how to use the system and are smart enough to take measures not to fail their drug test.

My guess is there are over 1 million Florida employees and welfare recipients, each test is going to cost the state at least $100, so if each person is tested only once a year then we are looking at least a $100,000,000 tab the tax payer's will end up paying and the drug testing companies in Florida will make a fortune.

Isn't it better to get some people OFF welfare than keep them on when some are using the money for drugs?

Isn't it more Cost Effective to test - find the ones using drugs - stop their welfare checks = save money in the long run......
