The article may not be garbage...with only a few minutes investigation I found an article By Dai williams about an upgraded BLU-109/B bomb ( AUP-116) that uses unspecified heavy metals to improve penetration, probably DU. Do you really think our military would readily admit to using DU in bombs ? There's been a lot of heat on the military since the early '90s , because of their wide usage of DU in multiple theaters....look up Dr. Doug Rokke Du specialist for the Army. Du will ultimately make Agent Orange side effects look appetizing.

The thing is thats badly researched speculation.

The bomb "Dai Williams" realy means is the BLU-116 AUP, AUP standing for Advanced Unitary Penetrator. It was made as a new bunker buster bomb that could penetrate twice as much concrete as the BLU-109.

The BLU-109 and BLU-116 are two different bombs.

www.globalsecurity.org...

It doesn't use DU in its construction.

From the case manufacturer:
The BLU-116A/B warhead consists of an explosive filled hardened steel penetrating case (supplied by Rickard Metals) surrounded by an aerodynamic airframe. The bomb consists of two major sub assemblies and the explosive fill is 115 pounds of PBXN-109.

The GBU-24G/B is a deep penetration hard target bomb. Upon impact, the aerodynamic airframe splits apart and the penetrator continues its trajectory through multi-layers of steel re-inforced concrete to its pre-determined target altitude where it is detonated, destroying its bunker target.

Dei Williams has no idea how weapons work and is a idiot.
Most of the weapons on his site do not contain DU.

www.eoslifework.co.uk...
What few weapons that do are clearly marked by gold color code (Not yellow) as having DU
Tank penetrate rounds and gun rounds. bombs and other large weapons would have a gold (not yellow)color band.
This is the rules in the military that all special ordnance must be marked to identify type and dangers like incendiary or highly toxic materials, or radioactive.
They would also be hard marked as a stencil on the casing of ordnance or have in engraved in the casings
this is for fire protecting, safe storage and EOD identification.

These are DU

These are not DU
This is a training round.

You would have to show me photos of these marking before i would believe any rounds had DU in them.

I spent 6 years in the navy working around ordnance and trained to identify ordnance.

Plus i worked for a years doing high speed photography of exploding ordnance at Naval Weapons Center China Lake

My contention is that a bomb or some bombs are using DU to enhance penetration...as to the specifics you are probably correct...who cares??!! I did find a link to BLU-116 designed to use DU as a penetrator option in U.S.patent #6,389,977. I'm not interested in the specific bomb that uses Du...I'm just saying that the military admittedly uses DU in many other munitions, why not in bombs if it gives them an advantage? As to them offering this info to the public ,it would be a need to know basis only.
