Just because someone is single and rides their bike everywhere doesn't mean they have no life.
To answer your question about having a family and no car.... friends of mine have 2 kids and when they where younger they rode in a bike trailer when the weather was nice. When the weather wasn't nice they either stayed home, or if they had to...took the bus. Now that the kids are older they have their own bikes.
