New quake near Japanese nuclear plant

A strong earthquake has struck near the troubled nuclear power plant at the centre of Japan's radiation crisis, the meteorological agency said.

The agency said there was no fear of a tsunami following the quake, whose magnitude was recorded at 6.0 by the agency today.

Public broadcaster NHK said there was no immediate report of further damage to nuclear power plants in Fukushima, including the Fukushima No. 1, which was crippled by the March 11 quake and tsunami.

Err no further damage? If the reporting so far is anything to go by; what a load of crap..

Now it seems if though 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0 earthquakes are just normal everyday occurrences to them..(News Media) Guess you'll have to have a 10.0 or better for any damage to occur now...Same thing they did to the radiation ratings by upping there levels...

My sentiments exactly, I fail to see how a 6.0 earthquake could do no damage to an already #ed up area...

There have been dozens of aftershocks in the 6.x+ range since the big one. Normally it would be more significant, but in light of what's happened, 6.x aren't at all surprising nor unexpected. This is what happens when you have an earthquake this big. When you have a "Big One" that is in the 7.x range, you can expect a few 6.x aftershocks, but not nearly so many as this. Realize that a 9.0 is 100 time more powerful than a 7.0 and it makes more sense. In the wake of a 7.0 you'll get a lot of 4.x and 5.x aftershocks and a handful of 6.x shocks. Just scale that up for a 9.x and you get 6's and 7's lasting for some time after.

Actually, you are fairly incorrect. There have been dozens in the 5.x range -- and indeed, there are thousands worldwide every year. 6.x and up is a whole other ballgame, with only 100 or so in the world every year, which is why when three aftershocks of 6.3 and up struck it was big news, whereas all the 5.x ones have not been news at all. 6.x is where you start to get the potential for big damage, though it's not a certainty and a lot depends on how shallow the epicenter is.

Actually they got two of 6.6 and one of 6.4 (counting those above 6 only).

Well it's certainly a strong quake. However the richter scale is exponential in nature.

there have been hundreds of after shocks in japan.
it's anyones guess whether any of the hundred or so quakes have caused much more damage.

keep in mind that the japanese are probably the best when it comes to building structures that resist quakes.
