A second case of a possible transmission of vCJD via a blood transfusion has been revealed by the Department of Health.
The patient died from causes unrelated to the disease, but a post mortem found the vCJD agent in their spleen.

The patient received the transfusion in 1999 from a donor who later developed vCJD, according to information from the National CJD Surveillance Unit.

It just goes to show you, no matter how hard plans and events are organised, it isnt foolproof. The NCJD unit has placed severe limits on blood transfusion and donor laws, anyone who recieved blood after 1982 i think is not allowed to give blood anymore.

Yes it severly cuts back on the amount of blood donated to hospitals, as they are very short and not everyone will or can give blood.

My personal opinion is that they need to take a step back, re evaluate the situation, redouble there efforts in testing of blood to make sure they dont contain vCJD protiens etc and make sure that plans are organised incase of a emergency.
