"It's believed the smoke is actually vapor coming from a rupture in the reactor's containment vessel" So why is the media across the board both domestic and international reporting smoke when it's not smoke. There is no fire, so there is no smoke.

Its not smoke..it is radioactive vapor streaming off the rods..they are extremely hot and they are melting. The media is not a trust worthy source..they are most definitley lying to us all..they are making it look like all is under control..it is not..same with the BP oil spill..people that worked on the clean up are dying..painful horrible deaths..they don't want to cause mass hysteria..That smoke is going to kill alot of people..thing with radiation..it won't kill you right out unless you are exposed right at the source..it takes time..and with time they can cover up the truth. This nuclear situation is much worse then they are saying....and the real scary thing..this nuclear reactor is acting as a smoke screen to all the other bs going on..this summer will be a historic summer..we are going to see many people die..countries lose their power(going on now) riots, revolutions, these events are taking place more and more..we are in big trouble people..big.

So you believe that the media falsely reporting the water vapor as smoke is a minimization, or sanitize rather? I believe the opposite is true. I believe misreporting water vapor as smoke is an attempt to sensationalize the story. A fire at the plant would be much more serious especially in the minds of people following the story which is what the media is capitalizing on. I believe for the interest of poisoning the name of nuclear energy. Using the top three American cable channels to illustrated my point of why news orgs would motivated to do so you have to look at where their chief investors and financiers make their money. On one hand News Corp is pro natural gas and coal, that's Koch brothers, oil coal and gas money, have financed Murdoch over the years, and on the other hand Time Warner and General Electric are pro impractical green energy, or at least their chief investors are who are heavily invested in impractical green energy projects that are funded through USG green energy grants and special tax breaks. GE to point out specifically makes zero dollars in the way of nuclear energy. However they build turbines and generators for gas and coal fired power plants plus many other components for such types of electrical generation systems. Right now they have a lot tied up in impractical green energy solutions. Does this taint their reporting? I think so.

Note this subject is about how the "media is reporting a story" about smoke that is vapor, not about the subject "crises in Japan." I don't understand the methodology behind why this topic would be moved to this forum.

And where is that water vapor coming from? You both miss the boat here. It is probably a combination of smoke and steam. Steam does not last long in the air, the warmer the air the less visible the steam. being somewhat around 40 degrees F. there, steam will rise and evaporate and you can actually see that process happening as it disappears.

Smoke, white smoke in this instance, means something is burning, heating or decomposing. With no electrical power to the buildings and with no long existing fires, and with the water being poured the buildings, we must conclude that the fuel is decomposing and putting up white smoke and steam from residule water. Both will be indications that radioactive materials are being particleized and put into the air.

All you have to do is watch the scene and forget what you are being told.

I was thinking the same thing to be honest. We've already been told a fire would be worse and seeing as they're trying to downplay everything why would they not be reporting it as steam if it was...or why would they be reporting it as smoke if they wanted people to think everything is okay?

Where is your evidence for any of this?

So you're a nuclear scientist too on top of being an atmospheric scientist? You have it all covered.

Hey, there is no fire. What you are suggesting is core melting. How does spent fuel do that exactly? Because what you have described could only occur in the core where the pellets are stacked into rods...... melting away.

The American media does not want to have people think it's okay. They want to sensationalize the story for their own reasons which I laid out in my first reply.

Ok, mister debunker, what is smoking'steaming where it shouldn't be smoking or steaming?
What else do we have in there, the water is gone, nuthin' left but concrete and steel, and those pesky fuel rods. ...Wait, my god, that is it! The fuel rods are burning" (You didn't notice?)

There is a lot of dust left over from the initial explosion caused by hydrogen gas pressure that built up from the storage cells that store spent fuel, separated pellets, not stacked as rods, normally under about thirty feet of water. This water boiled off after the pumps stopped working due to the lack of electrical self producing electrical system ( it's a power plant after all, they use their own power under normal conditions ) that halted circulation of the water that cooled the spent fuel pellets. These pellets still generate enough heat to boil water of course and thus the stagnate water evaporated after reaching its boiling point. Later when seawater was added to replace the water that had boiled off the first dumps created steam on contact. Same when they used fire hoses. When water comes into contact with any hot surface in and around the reactor building steam is created on contacts. Plus it's always continuously boiling off. That's the steam. What is called smoke are nothing more than particulates from the dust that is carried up in the convection current, it looks like smoke, but it's not. It's hot inside the building and it's pouring out hot air into a cold local atmosphere. If there is smoke it would be the same as if you put your oven on self clean. the creosote heats up and smokes. That's how your oven cleans itself. The paint and surfaces, even concrete, etc could be smoking inside due to the extreme heat like inside an oven, but that's the extent of any possible combustion that possibly could occur.

You used the term "fuel rods." That's inside the reactor core where pellets are stacked into rods. non of the five reactor cores are the issue. The spent fuel pellets are. That's what is causing the heat, the steam and the supposed smoke. Non of the containment walls that house the cores have been comprised. That's the truth, the fact of the matter.

I win this one, and that's just the way it is.
