Not sure how much this holds up but this article says that an error in calculation means that the real end of the world will be in 2116.

The Mayans NEVER predicted the end of the world. There is no prophecy foretelling the end of the world; their calendar simply ends, or restarts, depending on how they viewed time. The Japan earthquake shifted the earth on its axis and made the days a second shorter, how many times has this happened since the Baktun cycle calendar was created? How many days off is our calendar from theirs? It's just silly to put so much stock and faith in something that has been so distorted and manipulated. Kind of like RELIGION!

Just like my calendar here predicts the end of March and the beginning of April and it also predicts the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012, and it is quite precise, most often the month and the year ends exactly as predicted by my calendar. And the hours end exactly as predicted by my clock.

My calendar predicts the end of the world on the 31st December every year, and on the morning of the 1st Jan when I discover that the world did not end, it sure feels as if it did!

I am so glad to see the use of "most often the month and the year ends exactly as predicted", since of course it does not actually do that accurately which is why we need a leap year and leap century, and then there are Chile and Japan changing that a bit as well.

People always seem to think that "end of the world" means end of the "world" only life as we know, it just may be the end of era as previously mentioned..The earth IS changing, the poles ARE shifting, the evidence is everywhere, but no human can possibley put an experation date on humanity..We can take lessons from the past though and realize that the world has gone through many changes with/without humans existing on it..The world will live, global devastation in levels of natural disasters are happening because of a pole shift going on(its natural), our peachy lives will not always cease to exist in these terms..Like a dog having fleas, or child having growing pains, our world is young and wont stop evolving..Individual exstinction is on the rise in all areas of the world, whether it be disaster/disease..The worlds axis has shifted, mayan calendars have only been off by mins or secs, well thats already changed from earthquakes, scientists only know so much and are learning themselves, educational systems change every 20yrs, so what you learn now will change in another 20, why is that the mayans knew so much thousands of yrs ago about celestial bodies and time, same with the egyptians, but somewhere inbetween people were getting killed for believing the world was round?? Intelligence in history has always changed either we are getting smarter or dumber, its just a matter of deciphering which one?? Nobody knows so just live life like its your last, because for anybody, anyday everywhere it is someones last, and for every last theres a first
