Breaking! Military Action Against Libya Within Hours Of UN Vote: France

timesof india.indiatimes.com

France said Friday military action against Libya would come "within hours", as a UN vote approving air strikes was celebrated by rebels and Muammar Gaddafi's son said his family was "not afraid."

The strikes will come "rapidly... within a few hours," French government spokesman Francois Baroin said after the UN Security Council on Thursday cleared the way for air raids to protect civilians from Gaddafi's advancing forces.

Protect civilians? Pray, how are they going to do this by air power? The strikes would be undertaken for taking out Gaddafi's military assets. But is providing close air support and/or bombing Gaddafi’s vital installations and assets going to work? Simple answer – No! The UN would also need to get boots on the ground to help the rebels capture key locations and areas of strategic importance. NATO would, in all likelihood, be tasked for the purpose.

So that means more America troops! And considering that North Africa and the Middle East is on the boil, it looks like there’s going to be no respite from the cycle of troop deployment at least for now!

And be prepared to shell out more for your gas!

In case you hadn't noticed, the only reason Gaddafi has managed to retake much of what the Rebels held was because of his air-strikes. By imposing a No-Fly Zone this should turn the tables and allow the Rebels not only some breathing space, but also a chance to fight back rather than cowering in fear that perhaps the next bomb to be dropped will be on their heads.

Its really not that hard to figure out mate.

This means more civilians die. The only difference is who owns the arsenal.

It doesn't matter. If the world sits and waits, you'll have the people crying that action needs to be taken. If the world acts, you'll have the people crying about that.. In my perfect world, America would mind it's own business... This would include the conflicts that all of the anti american bloggers think we should get in also.

Do you for a moment think that the rebels alone would be able to take on Gaddafi's forces? Nope! They would need reinforcements from outside. Just enforcing a no fly zone isn't going to change the course of the battle significantly. Rebels are poorly equipped and they doubt they could hold on any longer. Remember, Zuwarah, was taken from the rebels within just a few hours.

The only main town still held by rebels in the west, where Gaddafi has his power base, is Misurata, 200km East of the capital and Gaddafi stronghold, Tripoli.

The total number of Libyan Armed Forces personnel is estimated at 120,000. The army is organized into 11 Border Defense and 4 Security Zones, one regime security brigade, 10 Tank Battalions, 10 Mechanized Infantry Battalions, 18 Infantry Battalions, 6 Commando Battalions, 22 Artillery Battalions, 4 SSM Brigades and 7 Air Defence Artillery Battalions.

Can the poorly equipped rebels stand up to this kind of force? Not a chance! Unless they get help from outside.

A defense minister who defected from Kaddafi recently was on the news yesterday. He said if Kaddafi stretches his supply lines to Benghazi he will be overexposed. He also said Kaddafi only got 45,000 armed millitary left, not enough to take the city without significant softening up by seiging with shells first for a very long time.

The no fly zone and strikes on his supply chain and the unit positions around Benghazi will cripple his army real fast. If it tries to retreat to Tripoli it will be another road of death just like in the first Iraq war when Iraq's Republican guard pulled out of Kuwait and was slaughtered from the sky.

(lyrics from muse song) Not my words

"Assassin"

War is overdue
The time has come for you
To shoot your leaders down
Join forces underground

[Chorus:]
Lose control
Increasing pace
Warped and bewitched
And time to erase

Whatever they say
These people are torn
Wild and bereft
Assassin is born

Oppose and disagree
Destroy demonocracy

[Chorus]

Whatever they say
These people are torn
Wild and bereft
Assassin is born

Umm, you'll remember that until Gaddafi started bombing the crap out of them, the Rebels were actually winning.

Agree with you, I guess the rebels on the ground are strong enough to take over Libia . As I understood last night, Egypt was the first country to get involved in the conflict, by supplying help on the east border of Libya . I suspect the air-strikes will be enough, and this way rebels will avoid for their revolution to be hijacked by other armies. Last night I ended up on a chat-room with people from Benghazi, and they were talking on how they are not the same ethnicity as the West of Libya , as they are Barberic population. Apparently the dictator wowed to massacre this minority in the East in a rage against the minority questioning his authority , or maybe this is something people made up out of fear.. Either way, I hope this conflict will have a minimum amount of victims . Freedom is so precious, you obtain it with blood and sacrifice , yet we loose it while our senses are sleeping for too long.

Stop just posting links. It's against the T&C of this website to just post links with no commentary.

B-52's, yeah now the real azzkickin is comin.
Nothing like a good carpet bombing to get things started off. His whole army could disperse and call it quits after one wave.
