Actually, it would be fairly easy to restrict the internet. Any company/ISP in America, has to follow US Laws. They could make it law to have certain software on your machine which could filter out "key words" or they could make it so the ISP runs the software from their servers.

Also they could attempt a simple enough terrorists attack on businesses all around the world. Why would it have to harm people? Instead they could do one better - money. Billions flow over the internet each and every-single-day, easy for the picking if someone knew how.

Power grids, etc, are all connected to the internet in one way or another. It has been shown before (Sweden/Australia) that you can cause major problems if you know how to do it.

That's basically what I've been saying.

And another thing. Let's say a major terrorist attack happened. There's no power. You're hungry. You're either freezing or burning up w/out heating and air. Don't you think your connection to the internet is gonna fall a long way on the list of priorities? You probly won't have it, anymore, to begin with, if that scenario plays out.

I still don't know why this thread was moved. It does NOT belong in the Slugfest.

edition.cnn.com...

They are putting the ground work in now, getting it on the news and media saying how much damage can be done by those "terrorists". Won't be long till a few major attacks happen online and then we are all screwed.

Banned from the internet? I can't see that happening. It would also hurt business in general in that many are internet only and many depend on the internet to get things done. I doubt the gov't would get rid of the internet but I could see some type of "new laws and regulations" coming out that may not make us very happy.

Oh well, there go all the smilies!

The government will never get rid of it. What they allow the people to have is another matter.

And remember, I'm talking about in the aftermath of some cataclysmic event. Like another terrorist attack.

I don't think the event will make a difference. I think the gov't will eventually start to strongly regulate the internet.

And why didn't you adopt me???? Hmmm, I am not feeling the love yet.

They've already been doing that. Did you see the links I provided to the articles about Carnivore and Echelon. It's worth a looky.

I didn't know you wanted me to adopt you! It'd be my honor, if that is what you wish.
I guess this means I'm gonna havta change my evil ways.

I read a little about those links but will take some more time. I know the internet will soon start to see rules just like everything in life and for some parts of the net, it probably will do it some good. But big business has a very large stake these days in the net and they tend to fund our elected officials so I suspect the net won't see too much trouble. As for what you post and do being tracked? Well, that is life and you have been tracked long before the internet came to be so get used to it.

Careful, as an adoptee I am a handful and a timeout does little to get my attention. Now a taser does cause me to stop and think a bit.

(PS I just spent an hour reading all that John Titor stuff. I think I have a pounding headache)

You're talkin to someone who's been in the U.S. Military.

To this day, I do not have the internet at home. For various reasons. That's gonna change very soon, though. For other reasons.

I lovvit. Guess I won't havta change those evil ways afterall.

Actually what ECK is doing is preparing his own militia for the upcoming US civil war. Have you noticed though that he is only adopting women? Hmm, you think there is something to that??? Can you email me that bud light, I could use it, I think I am starting to buy into some conspiracies and that is spooking me.

Hopefully, you'll like the new ideas since they're mostly for the Politics area.

That would be a very unlikely event. The gov't does regulate how severs operate and do have the jurisdiction to shut the internet don in the U.S. However, many jobs in the United States use the intenet as a means of sending infromation, such as deadlines, sending bills, documents, etc. It the US gov't decided to outlaw the internet, many, probably all major businesses and companies would shut down, causing one mother of a poverty crisis.

This would also effect the government itself. The government uses the internet (of course, with the best firewall and anti spyware)to send memos and documents to and from offices.

A shut down of the internet would mean a shut down of the United States.

Terrorism can be use over the phone, using a series of code words. So, shouldn't the gov't shut the telephone system down as well? Hell, let's get rid of the glowing picture box, and them iPods and all thm PsPs to stop the terrorist from killing all the puppies! The U.S. government would NOT shut down the internet. I don't who your sources are, but they are full of CRAP. Waste of post.

No one would have a clue as to what was actually happening! Only those within the government, science and defense would.

The government only knows what really happening. They just force-feed us this cock-and bull- story to keep the mass panic from ensuing. Nellis, anyone?
