Too horrific for words...

The terrible toll of Japan's double disaster became clearer today as it emerged as many as 25,000 people could be dead.

As rescue crews trawled through mile after mile of tsunami-stricken wasteland, officials from the coastal town of Ishinomaki confirmed that 10,000 of their citizens were missing.

The unimaginable figure is the same given as in the town of Minamisanriku, also in Miyagi state, which lost around half its population when it was razed to the ground by the 20 foot high wall of water.

What, 25k? That is insane, I wouldn't even be surprised if the death toll was even higher! Theyre really keeping information from everyone its messed up. I'd expect the death toll to probably even reach around 50k+

We have to remember that the stricken areas are without power, transport, communications or any other sort of infrastructure (food & water included) and the affected area is vast so exact details of casualties will be slow to emerge, not covered up. Details of who's missing might only be provided by surviving family members in many cases and many entire families have been wiped out so who'll account for them

The '04 boxing day tsunami casualties weren't fully realised until weeks after the event with numbers rising every day and even now it's only an estimate.
