If you want a "non-scientific" approach to the situation (I like them better since it widens the data pool) you might take a hint from your own moniker and ask the ETs!

When I did they told me that the whole solar system is transforming in an attempt to return to a more pure version of itself, free from the bad energy created by a few crazy folks who have been causing a lot of trouble in these parts for a few million years.

I like this explanation because it gives the hope that we could control the situation better if we could learn to handle crazy people. Makes sense to me.
