Ahh...I thought you meant my response,

Insulting a group isn't really a violation of the T&C. It's a bit rude, but not something I'd ding. Insulting an individual member/s specifically is when it applies.

Obesity rates means alot. The fattest nation in the world is also the most consuming country in the world. Do you see Africa or Russia consuming SO MANY RESOURCES mindlessly and without care?

Im not saying that obesity rates=consumption rates, but it is similar isn't it?

Sorry Mod, but the comment was directed at the OP. It said "American", not AmericanS (plural) But as I said, it's been removed.

Amazon.com is most certainly a company, listed on the NASDAQ as AMZN...
E-Bay is also a company, listed on the NASDAQ as EBAY...

Yes it is..

I never said they were not companies.

What I said was companies /individuals post auctions on their websites, and the cost of pills is not ebay/amazon its the people posting on the site.

On ebay I am glad to say the prices are coming down. Companies are now saying back in stock.
You can buy it for 10.50 with free shipping, with a large amount available. This is causing the gauging to go down.
I am seeing prices drop on others as a result.

In Japan
Cuts prices, gives free food away to help each other.

In the USA:
Super low risk of increased radiation that is dangerous enough to actually cause harm. Just slight panic among some people and prices rise with more than 1000%... Yeah, gotta love the US of A...

Trust me on this one, Japan will recover from this disaster faster than the USA could ever do from such a disaster. Probably faster than any country in this world, but especially compared to the USA. The true strength of Japan is their talent to adapt, keep it calm, discipline, helping each other and making the best of it as good and quick as possible. There are really some amazing stories on the internet about how they help each other.

Supply and demand. They that own the supply can demand any price they choose.

On another note, those that keep bashing Nukepills.com have either not read the company's stance in this thread, or have decided to ignore it. I'm hoping that in their rush to post while emotions are high, it is the former. If it is the latter then they are shamelessly refusing to follow this site's creed of "Deny Ignorance".

Price gouging is the free market at work. Do you want a free market or not? It is the law of supply and demand. If the value of gold suddenly increased by 10X, would you sell yours for the old price?
Lets be practical. The need for Potassium Iodide to be used in case of nuclear fallout is a well known disaster preparedness precaution. I would like to think that ATSers would be a little more savvy when it comes to this kind of thing. How could you be and ATSer and NOT HAVE POTASSIUM IODIDE?!?!?!? Are you equally deficient in other preparedness issues?
Wake Up Call!
Examine the Japan crisis very carefully. Make sure every item they need desperately is already in your pantry or emergency kit. The Japanese all had earthquake kits, notice all the dust mask you see them wearing. Do you have dust masks ready to use in case of quake/volcano/fallout/storm?
Here are a few items that you may want to get BEFORE you need them.
Potassium Iodide
A good water filter like this.
Food and water, the more the merrier.
Temporary shelter, (camping tents)
Get a book and learn the edible plants in your area like the incredible Cattail
Tons of lighters
Hand-crank flashlights and radios
CB radio or if you are serious become a ham (KE7FCY)
This is not Japan so you may need guns and ammo to protect you from your neighbors

First aid, get a book on field surgery. You need to be able to sew up a hole in your loved ones if there are no doctors.
Some form of hard liquor. It can kill food poisoning, disinfect, comfort the dying and even help you start a fire.
Hatchets and saws for firewood.
Dust masks, gloves and boots.
Bathroom necessities.
Comfort items can lower stress.
Be in shape! Couch potatoes will fare poorly when their couch gets washed away.

A little time on Google will give you a more complete list than this, so when there is a run on food/banks/water/Iodine you should be at home.

Indeed, prices going up when there's a run on items is part of the free market. Supply and demand. The obvious price gouging is however from human sickness called greed. It just appears differently in a Socialist/communist economy. In the former Soviet Union you would have just waited in a very long line to get it, that is if you could get it at all.

Well take note of the company and never go back there, and that's how that side of the free market works.

In my area there is a great deal of transient tourism, and many of the restaurateurs here know that a l lot of tourists never come back, so they don't take care with the quality of the food and service. That is a bit more systemic, but again, locals find the better places and do not frequent the crummy places.

Over the past few days I found out that real anti-nuke potassium iodide pills are NOWHERE to be found in my region... except probably in areas near nuclear power plants. So most are stuck with either ordering what's left of it online (that includes waiting for a few days to get the pills) or praying that your government will issue the pills within acceptable delays, or...

ALTERNATIVE: Sea salt!

Some brands of natural, extracted sea salt contains a relatively large amount of potassium iodide. Only thing is that you need to calculate the quantity of salt to ingest every day accordingly with the ratio of iodide shown in the nutritional section of the package (usually around 25-45%... which is quite good). The box I have here says 45% out of 1.5 g of salt, with makes 645 Mg of iodide in a single teaspoon! All the rest of pure salt (sodium chlorine) and two other non-toxic types of sodium.

And one advice: what they sell you in health stores is baloney... the usual amount of iodide you'll find in these kelp tablets is from 150 to 450 Micrograms (Mcg), which is ridiculous since it's a fraction of the required 130 Mg.

Potassium iodine effective against radiation?
weblogs.dailypress.com...

Potassium iodine, or what's known as KI, "is not an 'anti-radiation' drug," then-White House official John Marburger wrote in a 2008 memo. "Public misunderstanding of KI and its limits may lead to a dangerous sense of false confidence that KI provides inoculation against all forms of radiation."

Its like wearing a Chemical Suit in a nuclear reactor (K-19 widow maker )

Polenin and the radiation safety officer then discover the K-19 has no radiation safety suits, only chemical safety suits. "They may as well be wearing raincoats!" exclaims Polenin. Nevertheless he lies to the men and tells them the chemical suits will protect them.

These people complaining about price gouging...really? What makes you think you have a "right" to a low price? The pills are the property of the suppliers and they have every right to sell at any price they so desire. You want it? Then you pay what they ask for.

Whether they raise the prices or not, the items will still be sold. The pills will still be distributed, to those that paid for it. If you really think KI pills are going to save your life, whats $300?

The Japanese have lower obesity rates because of what they eat, not how much they consume. It is well known in the health industry that msg causes people to want to eat more. We can find a lot of msg in our food supply in the USA, and it is very bad for us causing higher obesity and headaches and other symptoms.
The Japanese eat more macrobiotically, more rice and fermented soy product and lean seafood. The fermentation process apparently makes it a more digestible product. I imagine the nuke crisis will upset their fishing business, as now they will have to monitor everything they consume from the surrounding areas.

I checked that site and it says it is temporarily out of stock. That is what a responsible vendor does. There is probably not a run on iodide on the east coast, unless companies are shipping their supplies to the West coast. That site looks like a good one and I've bookmarked it.

People are even buying them here in Finland. Some people have bought all from shops and sell them in eBay etc. for really high prices.

Some people still buy them, even when fallout will be going on other side of world.

We can blame media for it, too much fearmongering. Radiation levels are not so high even in Japan, according to some tweeters. Fallout will be going to North Pacific, when it reaches US, it will be so diluted that it doesn't affect to health. Fallouts go much weaker over oceans.

There is no danger for US, not even for Tokyo.

Well you're right iodide does not give FULL protection against fallout... radioiodide is one of the lethal agents included in radioactive fallout, but there's no know antidote against nasty stuff like plutonium-238 knows.

For an overall protection, you need a fallout shelter. This is beyond the power of chemical therapy.

Really are you complaining about "price gouging" on a product that never should be needed? and if you thought it would be needed then you should of had it already...

There was a similar reaction when the Avian flu came around and everyone ran for Cipro, as it was touted by news agencies during that time. I see now that Bayer is involved in an anti trust lawsuit with a competitive co.

True, but there's a reason Amazon.com recently dropped the seller of the book on how to sexually abuse children....it reflects bad on the site and is bad for business. Likewise, the website will suffer any backlash from other negative acts of it's retailers, including price gougers. So yes, it's perfectly valid to voice dissatisfaction to the agent (Amazon) facilitating the sale.

Thing is though, according to their site, nukepills.com is out of stock of the pull, and isn't foreseeing any stock of it until April at the earliest, so ANY price currently listed would be for something weeks away, which isn't going to help anyone anyhow. I do think it's pretty cool they donated 50,000 pills to the relief efforts though.

There is definitely danger in Tokyo since the wind often blows southwards, and does carry the fallout. As for the US West coast, it's possible, but some of the fallout has time to go in the sea.

"According to some tweeters" is not a reliable enough news source, buddy. Real news sources have confirmed high amounts of radioactivity i the area and over 150 people have been irradiated last time I looked. Foreign bankers already flown away from Japan two days ago. Who's deluded?

That kind of comment sounds exactly like Soviet authorities when they tried to downplay the Chernobyl tragedy.

When a major nuke plant release radioactivity not far from your area, there IS reason to be worried and protect yourself. anyone thinking otherwise is a total idiot who should never be listened to.
