Thank you. It sounds like they are at dangerous levels in that city, since they are measuring 18 mSv per hour in Fukushima.

No, microsieverts =/= mS. The 18 microsieverts is 1000 times less and quite safe.

Yep. Apparently the radiation at reactor 4 due to the new fire there is so intense they can't get close enough to put it out....

Actually they are just saying it seems it may have gone out on its own. Apparently it's not visible there as of about half an hour after it was originally observed.

How can we tell if the radiation is being measured in micro or milli? So far, I haven't seen anyone use the "u'" symbol for micron.

Micron is a millionth and milli is a thousandth isn't that correct?

Just saw on the BBC website that 'they' are pumping borium or boron into the rod pool @ #4 reactor to prevent "RE-CRITICALITY" (the restarting of a nuclear chain reaction)

When I went back to check the site had reset at midnight and theres no mention of it now....

Also if the other reactors had fuel rod pools over the reactor what happened to them when the hydrogen exploded? Looking at the film of the #3 reactor explosion it looks like some heavy weight stuff flew straight up and down again. Was this the rod pool?

Also I'd like to say I am glad that I have finally found a decent forum to discuss the unfolding events.

ok, so i just stumbled across an old video on chernobyl which i found a few interesting points in the second part, talking about cesium 137 and how the meltdown occured. Just brought into perspective the magnitude of this event, sorry if the link doesn't work, my first time.

Back on the thread for the evening. Thanks mods for keeping things on track, and all posters for keeping the thread rolling. TV JAPAN is showing telescopic live views of the plant again now from a helicopter hovering 30km from the plant.

I read quickly that some folks are trying to homebrew iodide and such-- don't, that stuff can be toxic! Only use OTC/Rx stuff if and when you are ordered to or need to, according to directions. Some folks are allergic to iodine-- don't experiment or panic. Having said that, if you feel the need, you don't need internal medication- we were trained to paint an inner forearm with topical iodine tincture or Betadyne (Povidone Iodine Solution) once a day- its pretty hard to hurt yourself or anyone else with topical iodine antiseptic, and it WILL load your thyroid gland.

Military surplus canteen water purification tablets also supply iodine (some genius quartermaster/doc was pretty smart, eh?).

Smoke coming from #4 and some kind of 'event' ongoing at #2

I heard on CNN about 1/2 hour ago that the fire at #4 had gone out... Now I see video showing more smoke...

I can't stop thinking about those 50 brave people who are continuing to fight for their fellow citizens. They are most likely giving their lives...or at least a good chunk of it.
