Blast, cooling system breakdown spread fears of nuclear radiation

www.cnn.com

While steam was being released from reactor No. 2, officials took readings of the radiation level just outside the power plant's front gate and found it to be twice the maximum level previously detected, though only briefly. At 9:35 p.m., the level was at 760 microsieverts per hour; two minutes later it was up to 3,130 microsieverts. The level dropped to 431 microsieverts per hour at 10:15 p.m., and 321 microsieverts at 10:35 p.m., TEPCO said.
About 200,000 people had evacuated the area following a government order over the weekend. And after Monday's blast, authorities ordered at least 500

There is a low probability of harmful radiation reaching the United States. Japan has asked the US nuclear regulatory for assistance. Keep in mind people on the west cost that there is a possibility of radiation reaching the mainland of USA. I hope we dodge the bullet with the nuclear reactors melting down. This is a warning that the government is letting everyone know that we could be exposed to radiation in the states... I hope everyone has their Iodide or *nuke pills* ready just in case. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

There are oads of threads on this, but I am still mystified as to why anyone in the US thinks radiation from Japan will reach them in anything like dangerous levels, given that radiation from Chernobyl spread nowhere near as far, nor did raditation from nuclear explosions in the Pacific or, indeed, the US mainland.

Lets hope not, the potential is still there for the radiation reaching the mainland US.

It is better to be prepared then get caught with your pants down..

A small probability is still a probability.

There's a small probability a previously undetected 6 mile wide asteroid will his San Francisco in 3 hours time.

There's a rather higher probability you wil be run over by a bus tomorrow.

If you spend your life worrying about things that almost certainly will not (or can not) happen, then you will never be happy.

As it currenty stands, the asteroid scenario is more probable than the radiation scenario. Were you not half way round the world from Japan it might be different.

Still, if winds change, maybe N Korea will no longer be a problem?
