Michigan bill would impose "financial martial law"

Michigan lawmakers are on the verge of approving a bill that would enable the governor to appoint "emergency managers" -- officials with unilateral power to make sweeping changes to cities facing financial troubles.

Under the legislation, the Michigan Messenger reports, the governor could declare a "financial emergency" in towns or school districts. He could then appoint a manager to fire local elected officials, break contracts, seize and sell assets, eliminate services - and even eliminate whole cities or school districts without any public input.

This is a scary mentality that seems to have sprouted. Higher levels of government wanting to remove elected officials is something that strikes at the heart of an American tenet. I hope the people say something about this.

My guess is Detroit would be the first city to suffer the effect of this bill. Seeing as it is already teetering on the post-apocalyptic side.

This should have earned you a few hundred flags. All of them red.

There was mention of this tactic at work over a year ago with plans to go strongly for the Governorship of each State -recognizing the Governors have extraordinary power and can even get rid of officials duly elected by the people in times of financial emergency.

I can't figure out why people do not recognize what this could mean to the democracy of the United States of America and stop it where it stands.

Where is the outrage?
I just don't get it.

Intresting but not Surprising. Michigan law is goofy in these areas. When the mess with the DEtroit Mayor was going on, Govenor Granholm toyed with the idea of removing him ffrom office. Not sure where the precedent came from, nor have I seen that setup anywhere else.

Sounds like a plan to stall the system and people, so greedy capitalist republicans can money bag as much as they can n make it out he back door. Prob gunna buse its power too. Hell The did i to us with the $800 billion bailout that went to banks! they realized n saw that, and now a city is doin it. thas what ive learned about our currrent congress.

Detroit, what better poverty and crime(very sad situation indeed) stricken city to test such an act on. Sadly it might not stop there, if other cities/states find the results favorable, we're all in trouble.

I've been following this story for awhile now. The MI Governor, with the unbridled aid of the Koch Bros., is attempting a coup of the state of MI. He will eliminate the citizens right to elect their local leaders and turn it over to corporations.

The Right is in the middle of an attempted coup of the United States. Pity the useful idiots are enough in number that they have slowed down the move to eradicate this invading force.

Sometimes when I drive through detroit or go to a Tigers game certain areas of Detroit already look like the rest of the country would , if a post apocolyptic world should ever come about.
