Arab foreign ministers urged the UN Security Council "to assume its responsibilities in the face of the deteriorating situation in Libya and take the necessary measures to impose an air exclusion zone for Libyan warplanes

Yeah, but contrary to popular belief, the Obama administration has blocked France and the UK's motion to impose a no-fly zone as well.

The Obama administration has so far blocked British and French moves to impose a no-fly zone over Libya to curtail Gaddafi's attacks on rebel forces and civilians. One stated reason for its reluctance is concern that the US has little first-hand knowledge of the embattled rebel groups, which have been asking for western military assistance with increasing urgency in recent days.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Obama expressed caution about dealing with the Benghazi council, which France alone has recognised as Libya's legitimate successor government. The opposition was "just getting organised", Obama said. Clinton's talks are intended to give the US a better picture of who it may be dealing with if Gaddafi falls..

The Arab league is trying to convince the US that this is necessary. (Isn't this ironic???)

Its unanimous weekend decision to ask the UN security council to impose a no-fly zone over Libya was seen as an extraordinary step, given historical opposition by the 22-nation bloc (The Arab League) to western intervention in the region.

...

The move was also a risky one for Arab leaders who face popular dissent at home. Syria and Algeria reportedly argued strongly against the decision in private discussions, insisting on a clause saying any western forces should withdraw as soon as the crisis abated.

...

Pressure on Obama to drop US objections to a no-fly zone has been increased by the Arab League decision highlighting "serious crimes and great violations" by the Libyan regime and by a statement by Mustafa Abdel Jalil, head of the Benghazi revolutionary council.

Interesting times we live in today.

Because it is none of our business? Why don't the arab nations do it themselves if they want it so bad?

Well, if it would encourage one here, then and only then would I be for it.

It is already been a major concession from the arabs, long wary of US and Western powers, with frequent calls for the the 'death to US', 'death to infidels', etc, etc.

That today the Arab league could unanimously seek for western powers help through a security council session, speaks volumes.

Amongst many, it proves their capabilites and tech is sorely lacking that they could not have done it on their own in order to help their fellow arabs. They know full well why. Buying armaments is different from building up a capable advanced society. It requires certain ingredients and in the light of current events, may they be aware of what they are.

But still, at least the Arab league has its heart in the right place, and that is to save our fellow human Libyan brothers and sisters, no matter the cost. It goes to show how common our values and aspirations in life each and every human shares, no matter our differences.

And that cost will not be costly financially. It is from the heart called honour. Today, the arab league had called for help. Tomorrow it may be US or western powers whom will call for help in the name of humankind's survival. The only constant in life are changes, for no one will know what tomorrow will bring. That help will be appreciated and return in kind, as long as there is honour.

Some pratical minded will say honour is just a word, like love, which doesnt pay the rent. But without love, that sense of purpose in life is meaningless and cold. It is only a human character trait but priceless beyond measure. Similarly with honuor. Without it, there is no sense in any committment or pledges made, and those that lack it will pay a price beyond mere finacial costs. We came into this world with nothing and will leave with nothing anyway.

To Gaddafi, we are ready and waiting. The clock....is ticking.......

IMO Because the only reason the Arab League wants it is because NATO told them they want it. The West is not going to make the same mistake they made with Iraq. No unilateral BS this time.

Better late than never.

Our freedom loving Libyan brothers and sisters had set in chain a motion that can no longer be reversed without dreadful and horrifying consequences. It had not been a choice of their calling, but a scenario created by the beast himself, when he ordered the mass murders over unarmed civilians pleading only for succor.

Having seen the reactions of his masses under his leadership or the lack of it, he will make even more sure this time oppression is tuned to the max, the way China had successfully oppressed every single chinese in mainland China. And China would be most glad to help Gaddafi. Birds of a feather flock together, so does mass murderers of a national scale.

Despite his claims of amnesty for rebels, NONE would ever believe this mass murderer. Hundreds of his own Libyan soldiers whom had refused his orders to kill fellow Libyans were tortured and mercilessly quietly silenced. That is the amnesty he offers.

Kill one and you are a murderer, but kill thousands, it is just statistics, so said Stalin. The stains of precious human blood is already on the beast, therefore another few thousands or millions means nothing to him, only that he remains in power. Absolute power...corrupts absolutely. His daily actions and press statements already proved that he had lost his human mind.

It's time for humankind to set things right, and there are many issues to set right. The Libyan question is one of such issues that we humanity must not shirk from, or we have no right to claim civilised status for we had failed to protect our fellow humans.....
