Assuming it's bad.

It's not.

Japan knows how to design.

See, that's the thing that worries me, since General Electric Designed the Reactor (American).

Dudes... F'in for real! It may affect us in the US ... It may not... And who gives a damn about the who attacked who in WW2?. Arnt we in the here and now? Look, we are all on ATS for the same reason, to DENY IGNORANCE! What we really need to worry about is the effect on the Pacific ecosystem, and the implications. I cant believe how many ppl jumped on BP for the oil leak... Where are they now? When a 1/4 of the worlds ocean could possibly become radioactive? ..........................................Just sayin...................................

Get a global perspective pls! We are all gonna need that in the near future!

when i saw some one mention the diablo canyon power plant, i thought some might find this interesting, when i was in the corp stationed at camp pendleton i use to see this plant from camp onofre and always had a uneasy feeling.
some times the others marines would try and get me to go down to the beaches there and i wouldn't, i think most of them were wanting to go to the nude beaches there. i was always afraid that i would come back with a glowing green p@@@er. they use sea water to cool the thing, and discharge it back out to sea. i know that the water never touches thefuel rods but you know, i thought better safe than sorry in some cases. when i was there they only had the one reactor. here's a couple of links that have real good pictures of the place. it sits right on the beach. and people swim right next to it.
this is socaledison diagram for the cooling system real smiple example.

www.edison.com/files/OCEAN_WATER_COOLING_SYSTEM.pdf

and here's a article about the problems they have had, this is a new source for me so please don't flame me for it.
so far they seem pretty unbiased.

and here is a genreal article about nuclear power in california.

they say that san onofre is built to with stand a 7.0 quake and 25ft. tsunami

Chernobyl didn't kill us with its radiation, Hiroshima didn't kill us with its radiation, the Russians testing the most powerful nuclear bomb ever conceived didn't kill us with radiation.

This will not kill us with radiation.
Like the events I listed above, only those in that area are going to get high dosage.
Anyone who says otherwise is a fear mongering doomtard and needs to get back to GodLikeProductions.

Apologies if this has been posted already but the following is an excellent rundown on the situation at Fukushima by a nuclear expert in Tokyo.

Chernobyl didn't kill us with its radiation,

The new data, based on Belarus national cancer statistics, predictsapproximately 270,000 cancers and 93,000 fatal cancer cases caused byChernobyl. The report also concludes that on the basis of demographicdata, during the last 15 years, 60,000 people have additionally died inRussia because of the Chernobyl accident, and estimates of the totaldeath toll for the Ukraine and Belarus could reach another 140,000.

Hiroshima didn't kill us with its radiation

According to the U.S. Department of Energy the immediate effects of the blast killed approximately 70,000 people in Hiroshima. Estimates of total deaths by the end of 1945 from burns, radiation and related disease, the effects of which were aggravated by lack of medical resources, range from 90,000 to 166,000. Some estimates state up to 200,000 had died by 1950, due to cancer and other long-term effects. Another study states that from 1950 to 1990, roughly 9% of the cancer and leukemia deaths among bomb survivors was due to radiation from the bombs, the statistical excess being estimated to 89 leukemia and 339 solid cancers.
the Russians testing the most powerful nuclear bomb ever conceived didn't kill us with radiation.

This will not kill us with radiation.

Are you speaking in the sense of "us" as in humans or "us" as in United States?

If you are speaking in the sense of "us" as in humans, well - lots of people have died in the past because of radiation.
If you are speaking in the sense of "us" as in the United States - then you have more problems that even a psychologist woudln't be able to handle.

Anyone who says otherwise is a fear mongering doomtard and needs to get back to GodLikeProductions.

Hmmm - never been there... but perhaps I should check it out because you sound so... commanding or even demanding about it all. I feel the need to get right in lock step with your views.... ummm wait...

I don't see anyone being doom and gloom about this - I see people wanting to stay out of harms way if this gets ejected into the atmosphere and follows the jet stream. Nothing wrong with that. I think you are jumping to conclusions. I love your immaturity at name calling also... no real need for it in these times of crisis. If a building is falling on your head, will you still be pointing at someone and calling them names? Hopefully the target(s) of your abuse will be running out of the building while you are still trying to belittle them.

Stop with the categorizing, this is about people dying – not your own witch hunt to point out people who are concerned.

Hi,

I am from Poland and I remember well the Chernobyl disaster. So, what I have to confirm to you is that you will be informed "in the last time" to achieve the "iodynum".

It should be taken MINIMUM 36 hours BEFORE you will be exposed to the radiation - and, not longer than 72 hours before.

In fact, 72 hours before (3 days) and 36 hours before is a good idea - 2 doses.

Question is how much time you will have in fact if the worst case scenario will start to play.

From my point of view, if I would be "probably" - like people in Coast of US - exposed to the radiation - I would take the iodynum right now - first dose.

If nothing will happen it will not be a huge problem for my body. If something will happen, second dose can be taken even 24 hours before with a good result.

And, do not trust so much to goverments - even in Europe we - me and my friends - knew about the Chernobyl from Greenpeace first, the European West TV and media (German, Austria) where silence. Sweden started to spread the informaion that radiation level is abnormal.

In Sweden it was 12 hours later. For 12 hours goverments of Germany and Austria knew it, but it was silence.

oh good lord. THIS MAP IS A CONFIRMED HOAX. it has been all over ATS at this point.

you should remove it.
I do not think so this could be part of part of project 2000,were the globel elite was to start a nucular war in isreal, then the two russian subs one on each coast would nuke stratigic points around us, making it look like a terrorist attack. to start the deaths, then china will send in the 1.000.000 men that they cannot get a woman for and they will get sick and die from having unprotected sex. but thithis situation kinda takes care of it at least i think that is what they the one's who are in charge of this Prison Planet, are hoping! at this time let us hope it is only the one plant that goes under, because if two or more go into a meltdown, let us hope we can find shelter because these maps are not fake this is the time of the year when the jet stream drops from canada into the states.

Not a bad idea since they just realized that they had a problem there.

UK here. I have ordered iodine pills. Also embarking on diet of kelp etc. Just google it and take what measures you can.. It might just help. Get your supplies of food and bottled water in NOW. Feel free to panic buy (before everyone else does). Get tape for the windows.
Watch the news. Be ready to hunker down.
It's just sensible preparation folks.
If it's some reassurance, I was right under that cloud from Chernobyl when it rained the next day - before I knew anything about it. I didn't grow two heads or start glowing in the dark. But I am sure there will have been a lot of unattributed cases of cancer. May be still happening.
You can only do so much but don't let that stop you.

My family lives in the eastern US, so likely won't need any potassium iodide pills. But I wonder if the need would ever arise, would we? You see we all live in the same state as 3 mile island, and none of us have thyroids anymore. Coincidence right?

Anyways, my question is what do folks without thyroids do?

Probably get more radiation from sunbathing than from this event. I wouldn't worry about it and taking lab created supplements have their own risks.

Staying indoors is probably the safest remedy...

Naw I didn't mean for this particular event for us easterners. Say for example we have another local reactor go into meltdown.

The reason I asked this question... There will be those in affected areas without thyroids. Perhaps from Hiroshima etc, for some older folks. And for the younger ones, leftover radiation from those events. Ah yes accumilated radiation from repeated exposure... This is unprecedented...

Best thing to do in a local reactor meltdown event is to get out of the area immediately and preferably up wind of the reactor.

CDC - Frequently Asked Questions about a Radiation Emergency

What KI cannot do
Knowing what KI cannot do is also important. KI cannot prevent radioactive iodine from entering the body. KI can protect only the thyroid from radioactive iodine, not other parts of the body. KI cannot reverse the health effects caused by radioactive iodine once damage to the thyroid has occurred. KI cannot protect the body from radioactive elements other than radioactive iodine—if radioactive iodine is not present, taking KI is not protective.
