BT child porn filter stopping 23,000 per day

"We've been taken aback by the number of attempts," said spokesman Giles Deards, adding the rate at which the telecommunications company is stopping access has increased steadily as it continues to fine-tune its filtering software.
Indeed the introduction of the filter, known as "Cleanfeed", has attracted controversy.

Free speech advocates say such blocking measures should not be enacted by the private sector without the backing of law.

Others point out that while a filter may work for BT, it may not do so for other ISPs with vastly different network infrastructure.

Well for once Free speech advocates finally agree to something (censorship).

I was just typing a post for this link when I saw yours.
I hope they are giving all the IP addresses to the police for each one of these offenses.

The big problem with that Zzub is a lot of the net porn goers are not pedophiles looking for under age porn. But when you're on the net looking for pix you never know what the link is that you're clicking is going to have on it. I'm not saying there aren't sick people out there but distinguishing between the two wouldn't be an easy job. Looking into people who continually hang at those types of sites would be a better way than looking into 23000 people per day a majority of witch more likely than not were just looking for legal porn and clicked a bad link.

Another link from the BBC
news.bbc.co.uk...

BT is only one of the main service providers in the UK and police leaders are calling on others to block paedophile websites.

I'd seen this article before, but though the figure represented the whole of the UK, not just BT subscribers. That's shocking.
As Zzub says, how hard can it be to track these people down? BT are the ISP dagnammit! They have names, home addresses and telephone numbers, the lot.

While I am wary of censorship in general, there has to be some way of filtering this stuff or tracking users, while providing simple "appeals" system for those people who's sites are wrongfully filtered by mistake.

An open appeals system like this, with judgements available to all on the internet, would nullify some of the problems of censorship.

J0HNSmith, I completely agree with you. There has to be intelligent control. It should only be people who frequent the sites, or download multiple images.

I'm not so sure about that. Is child porn really that openly available? I'm not saying I'm an expert but I've looked at bit of smut on the the internet in my time and never EVER found myself on a child porn site by mistake...

muppet You would not believe how easy it is to stumble across a child porn site, Or at least a link to it,

My younger niece is 4 and a model and we were looking for some agent lists and photographers. we must have come across at east 10 child porn sites we were shocked, we rang the police and reported the sites,

theres alot of adds out there and i think if you click on it then you should be in trouble,

But also i think there should be a known site where you can report a child porn site right away,

But i would suggest to anyone who stumbles across a child porn site by mistake, right down the time and date you came across it, , that was the police's advice to us,

About the volume of 'hits' and trying to trace these SCUM, I would concentrate on
repeat 'hits' (cookies etc). But, it is true that this would be hard for the police because
these %^#%$ put banners on over 18 porn sites. So a horny 16yr male types in .....
and clicks on a banner-ad and that means a false search.
Why...because the hot-link is not what it seems and anyone with a brain would 'shut the window'.

But, if the user who clicked the banner-ad and then revisited the site you might be
onto catching a scumbag.

Wow.. I really didn't know that. I do know there are a lot of dodgy "model agencies" and photographers out there, since my best mate is a fashion photographer. (not one of the dodgy ones though!), but I'm truly shocked it's so open..

As for reporting it, I'd agree there should be a widely known method. A couple of years ago I was downloading some mp3's on Kazaa, and hit the "show other files from same user" button. What came up were a load of filenames that were obviously child porn. Not knowing who to notify, I called my local police station. They didn't know either, and gave me the number of a vice unit (I think) in a neigbouring town. The officer I spoke to there took my details but said there was nothing they could do because it was a peer-2-peer network. They said they were aware of the problem, but without a web address they were helpless. They didn't even want to know any details like the username of the sharer, so nothing ever happened. Apparently it's a big problem on p2p networks, or was then anyway....

I was so angry.... I wish that I could have tracked down who that belonged to or who did it

In 2002 someone hacked the data-base of a Major Oz hospital and for 36hrs, ALL staff
who were trying to access a patients history were redireted to a sicko site.

This is true, but no names.

The only real way to stop it is to make the punishment extreme. I feel that those caught producing and distributing child pornography should be subject to the possibility of the death penalty. Taking the picture, but not physically involved with the child subjects... life imprisonment, no parole. Distribution of images... life imprisonment with parole possible after 25 years. Physical involvement with the children... death. Period.

Consider that these children are not only violated at the time of the photo shoot. They're more than likely victims of systematic sexual abuse by one or more adults. Then the pic gets distributed on the internet. If it's viewed 500 times, then that child is abused 500 times aside from the actual physical abuse they are experiencing. Their lives are destroyed by this, even if the pics never go out. It's not just porn. It's documentation of rape and guaranteed it's ongoing and not just for those pics or for profit from distribution. I would absolutely give the death penalty to pedophiles and child pornographers. They will never be worth anything in society, never rehabilitate and should not be allowed to continue stalking children like prey. Just my opinion.

Aso there needs to be something in place to help find these poor kids,
I cant imagin there little lives, i think they should be really putting some time into that area as well as finding the people who run these sites.

Personally, I like your idea and wish it could be implemented. But let's not forget "possession of said images" As far as I am concerned the penalties ought be 25 to life, depending on the number of images an individual has in his posession.

I fully agree on far FAR harsher punishment. Did you see the story a day or two ago about the judge who was found with 70 odd images of young boys on his computer...and he got off with a 12 month rehabilitation order!!

news.bbc.co.uk...

I know we can't burn people at the stake anymore, but no prison term?? That's insane!

That is beyond stupid. 4yr old model. What does she model? A little too old for the diaper crowd...so what? 4yr old swimsuits? A lot of those involved in the young girl model world probably have ties to child pornography in one way or another.

Err.. children's clothes possibly? Or toy adverts? or "fun family day out" type adverts? And what about all those Littlewoods/Sears type catalogues? Children's clothing is BIG business. Heard of Gap Kids?

We should find out the male relatives of the kids and tell them who is making these sick images of their youngins. Then we should let the kids relatives know of the nearest sporing goods store so they can pick up a few baseball bats and give them the address of the sickos. I say publicly beat them until they cant feel pain, then bury them alive.
