the japan potential nuclear disaster

Okay i thought id open a thread here because even though its indirectly connected to the earthquake, it is a seperate topic in itself, and a lot of the reports coming out have been conflicting

some have been `high alert` followed by a `nah we got backup everything is okay` reports

now im on fox news and the headlines are this

Thousands of people have been evacuated from the area near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant as radiation levels surge to 1,000 times their normal levels


this is very very serious

so let us make this thread SOLELY devoted to the nuclear situation where you can discuss the posibilities and hopefuly scenario which doesnt play out, as it could make the earthquake thing look like child`s play if it was to blow

This could be a very serious situation indeed..Thousands of innocent lives lost..It would be a disaster of unspeakable proportions.. Similar to the Chernobyl disaster..It would be Tragic.

By the way you get no stars or flags from me..I will participate Because I find the subject of interest. If it is stars you are after then I can't see this thread lasting long anyway.

Also what will this do to their economy and then to the Japanese companies..and thus knock on effect to other countries investments in japan.

the conflicting reports have come through all day

there have been many `high alerts` issued

followed each time by assurance that all is okay!

something is up, why would their first state of emergency be declared if it was just an assumption

Yeah apparently they are playing it down, but it could be really serious radiation 1000 times the norm. Something about the cooling system for there nuclear reactors not working properly.

i think the wide evacuations are a case of 'better safe than sorry'. ive heard reports of neglible radiation leaks.
but it seems it was mainly an initial problem with cooling after loss of power.
priority is to make it stable and move people away, just in case. but i cant imagine there will be a disaster of any kind.
hope so anyway.

In case you haven't noticed Japan just passed the tsunami and quake from hell test with flying colors. The pictures I have seen show people who are upset but not panicked, I think they got this one.
We saw what happened in Haiti, now we see the opposite end of the specrtum. There is far more damage from the water than the quake in terms of property, the buildings were constructed with care and precision. I see no reason to believe they lowered their standards when constructing the nuclear plant.
This is not Chernobyl.
