They are evacuating the plant... that means its out of control

Radiation is feared to have leaked after the container vessel was damaged at Fukushima's reactor 2, the Kyodo news agency is quoting Tokyo Electric Power Company as saying.

Seems it's official.... oh lord... this is not good..

Now saying that there was an explosion in #2

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/a72f314c9818.png[/atsimg]

They just said radiation levels 8x higher than allowed exposure for one year

The scientist has said they have evacuated the plant and is a good chance the containment unit has a crack and water is leaking out

BREAKING NEWS:Fire at reactor 4 of Fukushima nuclear plant, says Japanese PM

Too many threads on this Information is getting lost and its impossible to keep up

www.ustream.tv...

is announcing now building four has a fire. The steam coming from building three is coming from the pool of spent fuel on the top floor that now no longer has a roof and has no way to cool the spent fuel.

Why on earth would they put it above the reactors is beyond me instead of a separate facility...

Evacuation, total, within the 20 km radius and stay indoors in office or home from 20-30 km radius.

for perspective.. 400 milisieverts = 40 rads (more familiar units to Americans. They are also not understanding why the radiation levels fluctuate so much

Lost that feed... still saying it here

www.livestation.com...

Okay so they have reported level of 300 and 400 milliesieverts. They are saying 150 milliesieverts will cause temp sterililty in men and 500 milliesieverts well damage white blood sales

Shortage of fuel so stay home and seal the house, dust off clothing and don't bring laundry in from outside

www.livestation.com...

Anyone else having trouble with ATS? I get the feed no interruptions but ATS loggin keeps blinking in and out

Reuters announced explosion in #4 now

Japan says radiation levels rising around plant after explosion

Mar 14, 2011 10:29pm EDT

TOKYO, Japan, March 15 (Reuters) - Radiation levels around quake-stricken nuclear reactors in northeastern Japan are rising but there are no plans to extend the 20-km evacuation zone, the government said on Tuesday.

An explosion at the No. 4 reactor likely caused the new radiation which could rise to levels that may affect health around the reactors.

Right now the winter weather front coming in will bring snow and colder temps but the wind is blowing towards the ocean from China so its going out to sea at the moment. They say weather will not break till the weekend

So it will be cold for the survivors but the radiation is blowing east

It gets even worse:

Officials: Spent fuel rods may have burned in blaze at nuclear plant

Spent fuel rods containing radioactive material may have burned in Tuesday's fire at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant -- causing a spike in radiation levels, the plant's owner said.

The blaze started Tuesday morning but was later extinguished, Tokyo Electric Power Company said. It was unclear how much radioactive material may have been emitted, or what kind of health threat that could pose.

Fukushima: Burning spent fuel rods spiked radiation levels

Even as reports began circulating around the globe about a spike in radiation levels at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear park, leading to fears that a meltdown in the reactors may have begun, the plant's owners have offered another explanation. Spent fuel rods, which are radioactive and still lying in a pool adjoining a nuclear reactor at the park, may have burned in a blaze noticed on Tuesday and were responsible for the radiation spike, the Tokyo Electric Power Co said.

...

More than 200 tons of spent nuclear fuel is stored in pools adjacent to the reactors. Those cooling pools depend on continually circulating water to keep the fuel rods from catching fire. Without power to circulate the water, the rods would heat up and the water boil away leaving the fuel rods exposed to air.

Earlier, an aerial photograph of the Fukushima complex appeared to show that the spent fuel pool was steaming hot, indicating that the water was boiling off, outside experts had said.

Japanese officials had earlier informed the International Atomic Energy Agency that radioactivity was "being released directly into the atmosphere" during the fire, according to an IAEA statement.

A complete mess.

Okay so the workers are now abandoning the plant

America on radiation alert: Japan faces world's worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl as experts warn fallout may reach U.S.

www.dailymail.co.uk...

Fears that America could be hit by the nuclear fallout from the Japan earthquake have dramatically increased as workers prepared to abandon a reactor crippled by the earthquake and tsunami last night in the face of what is set to become the world's second worst nuclear disaster - topped only by Chernobyl.

Damage at the number two reactor at the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power complex is worse than thought, the Japanese government admitted tonight, sparking fears for human health both in Japan and the U.S.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has admitted it is 'quite possible' the fallout could reach America.

UPDATE 12:36: Now the EU Energy Commissioner responsible for the earlier catastrophe comment says he did not say a catastrophe was going to happen, rather that it was his fear.

IAEA has denied the situation is "out of control," via CNBC.

UPDATE 11:55: Fuel rods in reactors 4, 5, and 6 are now exposed and four reactor units have core damage, according to the IAEA (via Bloomberg).

The EU energy minister responsible for the earlier comments claims he got his information from the EU, IAEA, Japan, and media reports.

UPDATE 11:01 Horrible headline crossing the wires via RanSquawk: EU ENERGY CHIEF SAYS POSSIBLE CATASTROPHIC EVENT IN NEXT HOURS.

He's also -- and this is via Dow Jones -- calling the situation "out of control"

The market briefly got hammered by this but has already recovered.
