Uhhh, my research says NOT TOO GOOD! There is a huge cover-up here...In 1999 Greenpeace reported the shipment of a huge amount of this fuel headed to Japan.

archive.greenpeace.org...

NOTICE that this fuel was for the same company that owns Fukushima

www.icjt.org...

In the above link notice the operating years versus the years since they went commercial. Probably had to shut down to switch over to use this MOX fuel...?

Reuters:
"Japan nuclear safety agency says the number of people possibly exposed to radiation from Fukushima plant could reach 160"

10 Min. ago they were saying 9 people were exposed...
That's one gloomy trend...

No it doesn't. This is a global event, and as usual we're getting the runaround and the intentionally misleading information that ALL governments are famous for...

Mox fuel is certainly in use at this reactor. I don't know enough about this stuff and can't read fast enough to understand and post here for all to see, but what I think the concern would be is the more dangerous nature of plutonium and it's longer rate of decay. I'm sure I'll be corrected by all of this, but it needs to get out before links start disappearing if I'm right...being wrong would make my day.

neutrons do have a half life, but it's of more theoretical nature because they will cause transmutation (-> activated structural materials) or fission of long before they get a chance to decay.

fission products are of course the main worry, notably various iodine isotopes, Cs-137, Sr-90 and so on, see

for details & half lives.

much more dangerous is a stretch, because near the end of a fuel's 'active life' in the reactor, a high percentage of power is derived from bred Plutonium anyway. MOX may have gradually worse thermal characteristics than pure U-oxide fuels, but don't quote me on that.

MOX disadvantages have more to do with the reprocessing itself (which creates some more waste) and the isotopic composition of spent fuel after two passes, which doesn't lend itself as well for further use as startup charge for other reactor types, like molten salt based varieties, see f-x

Glad someone else has read that or heard it about the Mox, and the Plutonium. I posted it some place earlier and was called full of crap. Yet CNN had an expert saying one of the plants had it and was using it. They also stated if the plant with this in it went it would be much worse then a regular plant going.

Also stated was that U.S, and other governments asked Japan not to use the experimental fuel and they did it any ways.

CNN is once again saying everything is now under control, and nothing to worry about. In fact they are now showing Libya news and all kinds of other things, this is what ticks me off. Yet according to them the explosion did nothing to the reactor?? I am sorry but wasn't it the reactor that had the explosion?? WTF? I am getting all screwed up today with CNN changing the story every few hours today.

It wasn't the reactor. If it had been, there would be a huge white plume of steam as the core melted down in open air.

It's not just cnn, foxnews has been doing the same back and forth game all day long. Some of these anchors talk like adding seawater to the system is something normal to do for example. But I agree have been hearing radiation levels are bad then just a short time later they say they are reducing.

Im watching CNN right now and they just said 10 plants have been shut down at the moment.

Iodine tablets have been distributed to the surrounding population, and 3 people chosen at random in a hospital have tested positive for radiation poisoning.

- All from CNN within the last 5 minutes.

Hah! Total lolz. You made me laugh in the middle of all this horrible tradgedy.

I gave up, and what gets me is now its 10 plants??? Next they will be back down to a few then they will say everything is fine. To be exact there was a page about the Nuclear plants in Japan and Japan is saying everything is fine and dandy.

For those that do not like fine print:

Unit 1 (shut down at 2:48pm on March 11th)
- Reactor is shut down and reactor water level is stable.
- Offsite power is available.
- At 8:19am, there was an alarm indicating that one of the control rods
was not properly inserted, however, at 10:43am the alarm was
spontaneously called off. Other control rods has been confirmed that they
are fully inserted (reactor is in subcritical status)
- Status of main steam isolation valve: closed
- Injection of water into the reactor is done by Make-up Water Condensate
System.
- At 6:08pm, we announced the increase in reactor containment vessel
pressure, assumed to be due to leakage of reactor coolant. However, we
do not believe there is leakage of reactor coolant in the containment
vessel at this moment.
- At 5:22am, the temperature of the suppression chamber exceeded
100 degrees. As the reactor pressure suppression function was lost,
at 5:22am, it was determined that a specific incident stipulated in
article 15, clause 1 has occurred.
- We decided to prepare implementing measures to reduce the pressure of
the reactor containment vessel (partial discharge of air containing
radioactive materials) in order to fully secure safety. This preparation
work started at around 9:43am and finished at 6:00pm.

Unit 2 (shut down at 2:48pm on March 11th)
- Reactor is shut down and reactor water level is stable.
- Offsite power is available.
- Control rods are fully inserted (reactor is in subcritical status)
- Status of main steam isolation valve: closed
- Injection of water into the reactor is done by Make-up Water Condensate
System.
- We do not believe there is leakage of reactor coolant in
the containment vessel.
- At 5:32am, the temperature of the suppression chamber exceeded
100 degrees. As the reactor pressure suppression function was lost,
at 5:32am, it was determined that a specific incident stipulated in
article 15, clause 1 has occurred.
- We decided to prepare implementing measures to reduce the pressure of
the reactor containment vessel (partial discharge of air containing
radioactive materials) in order to fully secure safety. This preparation
work started at around 10:33am and finished at 10:58pm.

Unit 3 (shut down at 2:48pm on March 11th)
- Reactor is shut down and reactor water level is stable.
- Offsite power is available.
- Control rods are fully inserted (reactor is in subcritical status)
- Status of main steam isolation valve: closed
- We do not believe there is leakage of reactor coolant in
the containment vessel.
- We decided to prepare implementing measures to reduce the pressure of
the reactor containment vessel (partial discharge of air containing radioactive
materials) in order to fully secure safety. The preparation woke started at
around 12:08pm and finished at 12:13pm.
- Reactor cold shutdown at 12:15pm

Unit 4 (shut down at 2:48pm on March 11th)
- Reactor is shut down and reactor water level is stable.
- Offsite power is available.
- Control rods are fully inserted (reactor is in subcritical status)
- Status of main steam isolation valve: closed
- Injection of water into the reactor is done by Make-up Water Condensate
System.
- We do not believe there is leakage of reactor coolant in
the containment vessel.
- In order to cool down the reactor, injection of water into the reactor
had been done by the Reactor Core Isolation Cooling System, however,
At 6:07am, the temperature of the suppression chamber exceeded
100 degrees. As the reactor pressure suppression function was lost,
at 6:07am, it was determined that a specific incident stipulated in
article 15, clause 1 has occurred.
- We decided to prepare implementing measures to reduce the pressure of
the reactor containment vessel (partial discharge of air containing
radioactive materials) in order to fully secure safety. The preparation
woke started at around 11:44am and finished at around 11:52am.

Indication from monitoring posts installed at the site boundary did not
show any difference from ordinary level.
No radiation impact to the external environment has been confirmed.
We will continue to monitor in detail the possibility of radioactive
material being discharged from exhaust stack or discharge canal.
There is no missing person within the power station.
We are presently checking on the site situation of each plant while
keeping the situation of aftershock and Tsunami in mind.
A seriously injured worker who had been trapped in the crane operating
console of the exhaust stack was transported to the ground at 5:13pm and
confirmed dead at 5:17pm. We sincerely pray for the repose of his soul.
A worker was lightly injured spraining his left ankle and cutting both
knees when he fell while walking at the site. The worker has returned to
work after medical treatment and rest.
At 10:15pm, an earthquake occurred centered in offshore Fukushima
prefecture. No damage to the plant has been found at this moment.

Let's see now, two ongoing wars and possibly a third about to start. The Middle East besieged with cascading revolts. Economic crisis at every turn and now this.

Meltdown Caused Nuke Plant Explosion: Safety Body

TOKYO (Nikkei)--The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) said Saturday afternoon the explosion at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant could only have been caused by a meltdown of the reactor core. The same day, Tokyo Electric Power Co. (9501), which runs the plant, began to flood the damaged reactor with seawater to cool it down, resorting to measures that could rust the reactor and force the utility to scrap it. Cesium and iodine, by-products of nuclear fission, were detected around the plant, which would make the explosion the worst accident in the roughly 50-year history of Japanese nuclear power generation.

Red Alert: Nuclear Meltdown at Quake-Damaged Japanese Plant Read more: Red Alert: Nuclear Meltdown at Quake-Damaged Japanese Plant | STRATFOR

A March 12 explosion at the earthquake-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Okuma, Japan, appears to have caused a reactor meltdown. The key piece of technology in a nuclear reactor is the control rods. Nuclear fuel generates neutrons; controlling the flow and production rate of these neutrons is what generates heat, and from the heat, electricity. Control rods absorb neutrons — the rods slide in and out of the fuel mass to regulate neutron emission, and with it, heat and electricity generation. A meltdown occurs when the control rods fail to contain the neutron emission and the heat levels inside the reactor thus rise to a point that the fuel itself melts, generally temperatures in excess of 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, causing uncontrolled radiation-generating reactions and making approaching the reactor incredibly hazardous. Japanese Government Confirms Meltdown

Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) said March 12 that the explosion at the Fukushima Daiichi No. 1 nuclear plant could only have been caused by a meltdown of the reactor core, Japanese daily Nikkei reported. This statement seemed somewhat at odds with Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano’s comments earlier March 12, in which he said “the walls of the building containing the reactor were destroyed, meaning that the metal container encasing the reactor did not explode.” Read more: Japanese Government Confirms Meltdown | STRATFOR
