It's kind of funny how fast that spun off topic. Sometimes when I think things through, I write them down the same way I think them, hence is why God was even mentioned but that was COMPLETELY beside the point. I was speculating on the possibility of creating an O3 filled dome around the facilities to decrease radiation. Anybody have any thoughts on THAT topic?

Official: Spent fuel rods exposed, heightening concerns

Spent fuel rods in Unit 4 of Japan's stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant have been exposed, resulting in the emission of "extremely high" levels of radiation, the head of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Wednesday.

"What we believe at this time is that there has been a hydrogen explosion in this unit due to an uncovering of the fuel in the fuel pool," Gregory Jaczko told a House energy and commerce subcommittee hearing. "We believe that secondary containment has been destroyed and there is no water in the spent fuel pool, and we believe that radiation levels are extremely high, which could possibly impact the ability to take corrective measures."

www.cnn.com...

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is coming right out with the truth. This is extremely serious. We will all know very soon which way this is going end. Time is running out to get this under any reasonable control. They need to get the people out of there, 30km at least but I would go with the 80km that the US government recommended at this point.

Belittling others' beliefs may help YOU feel better, but it's not really helping anyone else...

Maybe we could just ask God to fix it instead???

Certainly it would be no problem for God to fix. What man wants is for God to fix their problems, but to stay out of preventing them from making the problems to begin with.

When man decided to rule themselves God let them. But only to show how stupid he (that is mankind) was to think they didn't need his help. When he steps in, it won't just to be to stop one nuclear reactor leak. It will be to make sweeping changes and end all human rule once and for all.

So I'm guessing any dust or vapour contaminated from MOX/plutonium isotopes from fires and/or explosions (that have either occured or are accelerating) may be a source of spikes in this stuff, and I do believe the USA space/air observation/detection technology cited in the revision of the USA advbice/exclusion zone enlargement would probably have been able to detect such radiation hazards?

Can't they take helicopters with cement dumping buckets and seal it?
How did they seal Chernobyl?
Was it sand,clay,boron?
Seems to be the answer other then water.

That won't work as long as there are overheating problems. It'll just wind up melting everything else, eventually.

And I think it was someone else here that pointed out how well the Chernobyl cleanup went.

They used nuclear and stored all the spent stuff there (I don't mean Japan specifically but world wide) because they were planning on wiping out people. That is my belief about using such dangerous hideous technology. Everything has accidents.

All of that, and lead too. That is actually the best thing to cool the molten fuel: it cools it as it melts and then mixes into it hindering the fission. The chain reaction is underway and fuel needs to be dilutet in order it bring it down.

CURIOUSTYPE: Spikes in radiation measurements come mainly from wind conditions; they carry the radiating dust randomly.

Wow, so they are using the Constant Phoenix WC-135!!!

The radioactive plume from Fukushima's reactors can't be detected by satellites in orbit, but it can be tracked by the U.S. Air Force's Constant Phoenix WC-135 jets, which are designed to monitor airborne fallout from nuclear weapons tests. Constant Phoenix came into play after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster in Ukraine to sample the air over the Atlantic.....an Air Force spokesman, Maj. Chad Steffey ... confirmed that a Constant Phoenix WC-135 would be sent to sample the air wafting from Japan, in response to a Japanese government request. The planes would be brought from Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. Steffey said he didn't yet have details about the timing of the operation.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior U.S. defense official told NBC News that Constant Phoenix's involvement was "absolutely" a significant event. "We are using it to help out a nation," the official said. "It's significant.

To all those thinking this is gonna be fixed with electric lines your soooo wrong. Once they restore power they must then figure out what's broken and looking at the pics it's a lot. Then they have to fix all that broken equipment like gauges controls pumps ect. After that they have to cool spent fuel ponds and get the whole site ready to be sealed off because if the reactors are breached they can't really cool them so well water goes in but comes right back out as steam...all this while extremely dangerous radiation levels are bombarding them. It's such a mess now I'm not sure how this is gonna end or how long it will take to end it!

The Japan nuclear agency says they are planning to run electricity cable to crippled nuclear plant.

-Reuters.

Can someone with more knowledge than me explain just how this is supposed to help, given the current state? I've seen AT&T disaster response semi generators that produce around 500kw of electricity. They didn't have anything like this in japan?

They are trying to reactivate the original cooling system now. They may still be able to fix this.

A mix of concrete and boron will have to be dumped on the reactors to entomb it. The boron disrupts the nuclear chain reaction. They are shipping in tons of boron from South Korea so they are getting ready for this plan.
52 tons of it. 17 percent of all their supply.

www.arirang.co.kr...

Once it is entombed. They will have to build another structure around that. Lead shielded I would guess. Then nobody lives around there for a very long time.

@TheRedneck: Can you chime in with some more facts for us please? Can you figure out exactly what kind of liquid is used in the SFP or Spent Fuel Pools, and what it's boiling point is?

Is this just normal water with no additives? I read somewhere that they typically keep the temperature of coolant in the SFP's to -25c, so that leads me to think possibly it's not just water but some other form of liquid, because i think water would freeze at those temperatures.
