I remember the North Anna quake. My computer table gently swayed about 5 times, maybe an hour and a half after it hit DC. I was writing GR a note at the time. I have to be 500 miles NW of N Anna. I think their explanation was that it's all on the same piece of Canadian shield.

On to the pics.
On March 11th 012 this black scafolding was beside this white building [marked] and roughly behind #2 turbine.

The Black scafolding seems to have moved south of the marked building by May, probably to get closer to #3 and 4. It does look like they are building tent sections here.

And a zoom on the area in between #1 and #2 from the west side.

I wanted to create a new thread to collect the names and links of all the documentaries made so far related to the crisis in Japan. But cannot create threads do to forum restrictions. So if anyone would like to create such a thread or point me to an already existing list I would be very happy=) Thanks!

Brazil like many third world countries process a lot of scrap steel, sometimes contaminated or radioactive sources are released etc... so we can't just blame fukushima for now. They do have higher backgrounds around brazil too apparently. Worrying though, some likely is fuku but hard to say without tests.

Does anybody else find this getting more and more absurd every day? Balloons floating through #1? Will there be monkey's with geigers floating around fuk waving to the NHK reporters?
280 billion and 16 months and we get balloons? And this on top of yesterday where they anounced they will drill into an EQ fault under a reactor...... to see if it's dangerous?

If they are using balloons R1 must be too hot for robots to function properly? How have they been in already though...

PC, interesting regarding the R3 temps and steaming, perhaps corium on the move again?

Genkiai reactor running much hotter than expected

a metal sample taken out in 1993 showed 56 degrees. But a sample tested in 2009 registered 98 degrees, or 14 degrees above the projected value. The finding triggered immediate concern among experts.

Same thing the Finn was discussing. That reactors around the world were running hotter than they should due to the sun influencing them.. does that mean neutron flux from the sun can influence nuclear reactors here? So that in an extreme neutron storm, not only would we be screwed, but all the nuke plants would pop like firecrackers..?
That metal is turning into swiss cheese like that. These things are absolute deathtraps in any iteration, hardly a wonder they meltdown so often..

The anti-nuclear protests have attracted tens of thousands of people every Friday evening. They are characterized by the fact that most protesters are individuals acting of their own free will, rather than protesters acting at the will of organizations.

If that vid was peak of the protest, 30-40,000 would be my guess. The original organisers told people to go to another protest but that many still turned up!

By reading this article, you might get the impression that the same levels of radioactivity must exist in fish caught off the Pacific coast of Canada or in the freshwater rivers and lakes on the Pacific Ocean side. Are any Canadian government agency testing? The answer seems to be "no".

Some interesting bits: P 23
During Kan’s visit, just after 6:30 a.m., a large explosion sound emanated from Reactor 2. It later became apparent that hydrogen gas from Reactor 2 had leaked into Reactor 4 through a shared (and likely damaged)
venting pipe. There it accumulated in the Reactor 4 building, and when it ignited, the explosion blew off the roof and much of the walls

Two Workers Fall Ill Working on Debris Removal Unit 3

-At around 9:30 AM on July 29, since two workers from cooperative company who worked for the debris removal at upper part of the Unit 3 reactor building said that they were in bad shape during the outwork, they were transported to the Unit 5 and 6 emergency medical room and had the medical procedure as drip etc. Since the two workers had the disordered consciousness and could not walk by themselves, they were transported to J-village by the ambulance. At 0:08 PM on the same day, they were transported to Iwaki Kyoritsu General Hospital by the ambulance. The workers are under medical examination and treatment by doctors at the hospital. For a reference, no radioactive material was found on the body.

Moju: Alarm Sounds but No Sodium Leak

Japan Atomic Energy Agency said an alarm was activated early Monday morning indicating a sodium coolant leakage at its Monju prototype fast breeder reactor in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture. No actual leakage or any effect on the surrounding environment was detected, according to the agency. The Monju project started as part of the government's policy to establish a nuclear fuel cycle, in which spent nuclear fuel from power plants is to be reprocessed for use in plutonium-uranium mixed oxide fuel.

Decrease Water Injection...Because of New Water Refrigeration System...

-After the full-scale operation of a freezing machine for cooling of treated water buffer tank retained water, the treated water buffer tank temperature declined. The Unit 1-3 RPV bottom temperature and PCV temperature declined accordingly. Since changes in temperature became stabilized, we reduced the amount of water injection into Unit1-3 reactor at 11:28 AM on July 27.

Unit 1: The amount of water injection from the water supply system altered from 3.7m3/h to 3.0m3/h. The amount of water injection from the reactor core spray system altered from 2.0m3/h to 2.1m3/h due to this work.

Unit 2: The amount of water injection from the water supply system altered from 3.1m3/h to 2.0m3/h. The amount of water injection from the reactor core spray system altered from 5.8m3/h to 5.5m3/h.

Unit 3: The amount of water injection from the water supply system altered from 3.6m3/h to 2.5m3/h. The amount of water injection from the reactor core spray system altered from 5.4m3/h to 5.0m3/h.

Some more details since this morning's news advisory:

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday that former Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant chief Masao Yoshida, who is recuperating from esophageal cancer, suffered bleeding to the brain and underwent emergency surgery last week. "His condition is serious, but there's no threat to his life and he's conscious," Executive Vice President Zengo Aizawa said at a press conference, while refraining from commenting further on Yoshida, who played a key role in handling the nuclear crisis at the plant last year. Yoshida felt ill last Thursday and was taken to a hospital where he was found to be suffering bleeding to the brain, according to Aizawa. Yoshida had left the position of plant chief in December after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

APNewsBreak: Troubled Cal Nuke Plant Maps Comeback

By MICHAEL R. BLOOD Associated Press
LOS ANGELES July 31, 2012 (AP)

abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/apnewsbreak-troubled-cal-nuke-plant-maps-comeback-16891480

The operator of California's troubled San Onofre nuclear power plant estimates that the damaged twin reactors could be running by the end of the year.

Documents obtained by The Associated Press on Monday show Southern California Edison notified the Public Utilities Commission last week that the Unit 2 reactor could possibly be back in service by Nov. 18, and its sister Unit 3 by Dec. 31.

An Edison spokeswoman says the dates submitted to state power managers for planning could be changed.

The plant has been sidelined since January after a tube break in a steam generator released traces of radiation.

The dates do not represent a formal request to restart either reactor, which must be submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Edison says safety is its first concern.

ANALYSIS: Tepco Injection Highlights Complications Ahead

e.nikkei.com/e/app/fr/gateway/rss_news.aspx?URL=/e/ac/tnks/Nni20120730D30HH615.htm

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Tokyo Electric Power Co. (9501) is set to receive a 1 trillion yen capital injection from the government-backed Nuclear Damage Liability Facilitation Fund on Tuesday, effectively turning the troubled utility into a state-owned company.

However, there has been a great deal of debate over the utility's planned electricity rate hikes, underscoring the contradictory nature of the firm's new status as a state-owned entity.

On July 25, the utility, known as Tepco, secured government approval for its plans to raise household electricity rates by an average of 8.46%, below a proposed 10.28% increase, from Sept. 1. The government has also cut the rate hike for corporate customers to 14.9%, from 16.7% at present.

Revised Rates

With the revised rates in place, Tepco expects its annual revenue from electricity fees to be 84 billion yen lower than it initially estimated. As a result, the company's management team will likely struggle to generate a pretax profit in the year ending in March 2014, a target it has set for itself. This in turn is stoking speculation about the possibility of more rate hikes.

The Economy, Trade and Industry Minister is in charge of authorizing rate hikes for households and supervising the government-backed fund that will inject public funds into Tepco. These two official responsibilities arguably represent a conflict of interest.

As the utility's largest shareholder, the government holds majority voting rights. As such, it should try to help rebuild Tepco's management and restore the company's tattered finances. On the other hand, the government is also in charge of overseeing public utilities and is supposed to minimize hefty rate increases that could cripple households.

Tough Times

In fact, the government's decision to soften Tepco's planned rate hikes has added to the uncertainty hanging over the utility's profit forecasts. Under normal circumstances, it would be highly unlikely for the biggest shareholder of a firm to make decisions that would go against the company's profits, including dividends and shareholder profits gained from gains in stock prices.

The government now faces a difficult situation. In light of this, it is understandable that Industry Minister Yukio Edano appears to have been inconsistent in his recent remarks on the matter. For example, Kansai Electric Power Co. (9503) President Makoto Yagi said on July 25 that the No. 3 and No. 4 reactors at its Takahama nuclear power plant in Fukui Prefecture would likely be the next reactors to go back online, following the relaunch of operations at its Oi nuclear power plant earlier this month.

Edano lashed out at Yagi for the comment, adding that he was "not pleased." The dispute has highlighted the difficulties Edano and Yagi currently face.

Kansai Electric is expected to post a group pretax loss of approximately 120 billion yen for the April-June quarter. To return to profitability, it needs to restart about seven of its 11 nuclear reactors. But so far, it has only been allowed to restart the No. 3 and No. 4 reactors at its Oi plant. Yagi's remarks therefore reflected his desire to put the utility's other reactors back online as quickly as possible.

Public Opposition

However, it is unlikely that public opposition to efforts to restart nuclear reactors will subside at any point in the near future. In recent months, there have been a series of anti-nuclear demonstrations in front of the prime minister's official residence.

Prime Minister Noda has been struggling to rally support from members of his own Democratic Party of Japan, largely due to internal divisions over the proposed consumption tax hike and the subsequent defection of about 50 party members, including former DPJ leader Ichiro Ozawa. For Noda and his government, it is becoming increasingly difficult to restart more nuclear reactors.

Due to this political turmoil, shares of utilities have been plunging. Over the past three months, the stock prices of nine major utilities have tumbled between 27% and 46%.

Market players believe that the nation's major power companies will struggle to restart their nuclear reactors, even with the separation of power generation and distribution factored in. Earlier this month, the entire industry accepted a decision to separate distribution and generation.

As is the case in any other industries, companies such as Tepco will need to change their thinking and come up with new strategies if they find that their traditional business models no longer work in the current market environment.
