they are talking about the quake on that thread , so why are we not allowed to talk about the reactors on this one ? makes no sense anyway .

This is exactly my view too. We have been discussing the entire scenario, including quake and reactors from the start and now we are asked not to. Fair?
Yet the reactor threads are discussing the quake without being told to stop.
I just don't get it.

unreal!!
0342: The Huffington Post tries to get to the bottom of the geological impact of the quake, quoting seismologist Daniel McNamara as saying the quake caused the land to sink: "You see cities still underwater; the reason is subsidence. The land actually dropped, so when the tsunami came in, [the water is] just staying."

Silly question from a geologically ignorant person, but is there any chance of that dislocation affecting the San Andreas fault line somehow?

Already have seen shocks in the Gulf of California. The continued shocks in Japan could stir things up all around the Ring of Fire. I keep IRIS on all the time... fast instant look at what is hitting where

Okay, now I want TrueAmerican, PuterMan and the rest of the QuakeWatch gang to get over here and keep us updated with whether this means something good or bad. Don't know what to think.

ETA: zorgon, I forgot about you! Is this good or bad that Cali is getting a little more active again? Relieving stress or building up to a big one? Your guess, obviously.

An official at Japan's Meteorological Agency says that wind direction over the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant will be monitored as it is a key factor in judging damage to the environment www.reuters.com

This is kinda scary, something is telling me that they aren't telling the full truth. I just wish they would just tell us the full story.

For what it's worth and if anybody wants to listen, pay attention to what the after affects of these nuclear power stations we be. Where the radiation is headed once caught in the jet stream should be of great concern, what areas it will pass over. What can be done to protect your loved ones and yourself.

Danger Posed by Radioactivity in Japan Hard to Assess

Iodine-131 has a half-life of eight days and is quite dangerous to human health. If absorbed through contaminated food, especially milk and milk products, it will accumulate in the thyroid and cause cancer. Located near the base of the neck, the thyroid is a large endocrine gland that produces hormones that help control growth and metabolism. Dr. von Hippel of Princeton said the thyroid danger was gravest in children. “The thyroid is more sensitive to damage when the cells are dividing and the gland is growing,” he said. Fortunately, an easy form of protection is potassium iodide, a simple compound typically added to table salt to prevent goiter and a form of mental retardation caused by a dietary lack of iodine. If ingested promptly after a nuclear accident, potassium iodide, in concentrated form, can help reduce the dose of radiation to the thyroid and thus the risk of cancer. In the United States, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission recommends that people living within a 10-mile emergency planning zone around a nuclear plant have access to potassium iodide tablets.

For me its pretty clear that right now the core is melting....
0352: The news coming from Japan remains bleak. Government spokesman Yukio Edano: "We do believe that there is a possibility that meltdown has occurred - it is inside the reactor, we can't see. However, we are acting, assuming that a meltdown has occurred and with reactor number 3 we are also assuming the possibility of a meltdown as we carry out measures."

I've been saying to watch Cali for a couple of days. The Redondo beach dead fish & the same types fish (although still alive) washed up a couple of days later down the coast in Mexico. Something's up! Gas escaping? Who knows.

Wow!That map that shows all the quakes marked. All the quakes run down the side of Japan.Looks almost deliberate.

Could an explosion near the ocean floor cause an earth quake and tsunami?

I think it should be investigated.

This is getting worse and worse... my god!

0406: More on the specific dangers of Fukushima 1 plant's reactor 3: The BBC's Chris Hogg in Toky saysthe reactor is fuelled with uranium and plutonium, meaning the consequences of a meltdown are much more severe than at the other reactors.
