No, it was the building that housed the reactor, if not mistaken.

How did it explode and leave the reactor intact?

Fukupshima plant. Not good.

Whatever blew up it was powerful. You could see the pressure wave pretty clearly.

# 0828: Japan's NHK TV showing before and after pictures of the Fukushima-Daiichi plant. It appears to show that the outer structure of one of four buildings at the plant is no longer there.

another confirmation. Just to reiterate though, it looks as if this explosion was in the secondary containment perimeter, and not the reactor itself, which, at the moment, is good news.

They may be just saying that to allay peoples fears. That does not look like a good situation at the plant from watching those vids. If the building containing the reactor blew apart exposing the reactor they are in for some serious ****.

You know, i used to enjoy going to the movies, because you could see things you thought would be spectacular to witness in real life, but after the last 11 years, i can say with clarity that Movies have taken a back seat to the Real World...

I'm beginning to believe that pretty much any event short of an Alien invasion is possible...

you know with the food shortage and the HIGH fuel prices this really sucks. This is some bad timing not saying and time is good.

The white smoke appears to be steam, so the real question is "where is the steam coming from?" If it is from the already down primary coolant system, then the reactor is in no worse shape than before. If it is the emergency cooling or the boiler though, that would make life even harder on the plant workers.

Edit
If the ceiling caved, all we can hope for is that the reactor compartment (which is very well reinforced) is still intact.
However, in order to cool the rods, they are gonna have to dig through rubble. Truly terrible.

I´m sorry, I thought I had just read that here on site, can´t seem to find it now.

So I´m not sure if the building that exploded actually haused the reactor, sorry for the potential misinformation.

Nope. Its smoke, confirmed. The ceiling in one of the reactor has collapsed as well.

No worries, there is a ridiculous amount of information coming out. Looks like you may be right, though....
