Of course aftershocks are important, but I think there is a psychological tendency to look at them as being after the fact, hence their name, and that the worst is over. The geologist on TV said there may be aftershocks up to 7.9 in the coming days...

Actually I think it might represent a big opportunity for them. Their losses are probably insured against, and there are plenty of people and businesses in Japan that will need replacement electronics

Why in Gods name don't they just scram the reactor? Drop the control rods in and stop the reaction?

Huh?

Generally speaking, any activity that occurs on the same faultline that is of lesser magnitude than transpires post big eartquake is considered an after shock.

Any activity that occurs on a seperate faultline, or on the same faultline as the original earthquake greater or of equal magnitude, is generally considered to be a new earthquake.

It matters not though, because anything over 6.5 wether it's an earthquake or an aftershock is considered very significant. Any after shocks that occur after a big eartquake, are significant as alot of damage has already been done, so AS's have the tendency and potential to exacerbate pre-exisitng problems.

You fellas/ladies arguing about this are splitting hairs at the most inapropriate time!

Just got the pattern of this new quake.

5.1 0125
6.0 0134
5.2 0143
6.8 0147
5.2 0159

So following 0125 the 6.0 ruptured which has resulted in shifting laterally the 5.2, which subsided under the subduction inducing the 6.8 setting off the next sequence of the 5.2 back to the South. Watch for the next quake to the North again where this 'sweet spot' is.

EDIT there it is, 4.9
edit on 11-3-2011 by RUDDD because: (no reason given)

did some quick looking...how many aftershocks are normal..heres an article from 2010500 aftershocks and counting after Mexicali earthquake

There have been more than 500 aftershocks from Sunday's 7.2 Mexicali earthquake, and experts said residents in the region can expect many more

and this is what the USGS says about aftershocks
and shouldn't aftershocks get weaker??

It could get worse it seems. Hope not. They say if the tremors are on the same fault and are less powerful than the original quake, they're considered aftershocks. There was another quake they reported earlier on a different faultline though, and it was considered a seperate earthquake but I'm sure it was triggered by the big one.

The death toll still could be worse..they've not had a chance to start going thru the muck, mud and debris - that's is probably where the worst of it is. It is simply too early to determine much of anything. It is much too early to make any pronoucements on the death toll, although I do hope it will be low. Unfortunately, even a half hour's notice is not near enough when you're trying to grab stuff, get everybody in the car, and once you get to the interstate you discover that there are thousands of others trying to do the same thing....one would not be able to get very far, even by car.

The plates are trying to "bed" themslves into their new position, they will either suceed in a few months, or if they can't bed in properly, more pressure will build again and another EQ will ensue.

There are no conforming patterns, just an illusion of such.
