Italian Island Crowded by North African Refugees

www.voanews.com

The people of Lampedusa, the southern-most island in Italy and the first port of call for migrants fleeing the strife in North Africa, have been preparing themselves for potential mass arrivals. So far authorities have managed to keep the situation under control but there are fears this will not last.

This is only the beginning of a problem that has been lingering for far too long. Fifteen years after the population of the EU acknowledged that multicultural society failed, leaders of the big nations have finally admitted it too.

Yet, thousands and thousands of immigrants (not refugees) keep on flooding the European labor market. In search of a better life, overcrowded boats set sail from Northern Africa to small Spanish and Italian islands as well as to Greece, Cyprus and Malta because they know they cannot be send back due to laws and regulation.

They are illegal immigrants who seek to benefit from our prosperity. They are not refugees as there is no war in for instance Tunisia. This is at the cost of our people. Italians and French youngsters have a hard time finding a job and the arrival of these people doesn't make it easier. At the same time, our social wealth fare system is collapsing under the weight of every increasing costs.

Call it selfish, but I am of opinion that our own people should be given priority over others, much alike the situation in the US with the flooding illegal immigrants from Mexico. As a result, far-right is on the rise all across Europe. In France, the far right part of Le Pen is set to win the elections next year, in the Netherlands a far-right party is part of the government and wherever you go, far-right is gaining support rapidly.

This is not the fault of the people, it's the fault of our governments. They have allowed this situation to happen and do little to change it. (Muslim) immigrants will one day become the Jews of Europe - the scapegoat of misery. Although I believe they don't belong here, especially not in these huge numbers, blaming them is wrong. After all, I would probably seek a better life myself too should I be living in poverty.

What I don't understand is why we don't simply send illegal immigrants back to where they come from. That would be an effective solution and shortly, immigrants would stop trying.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if this is what TPTB want - cultural and religious tensions. The powder keg is about to explode, which will lead to even greater division between ethnic groups and possibly worse.
My gut feeling says that there will be a major war, which will benefit none but a few rich elites. They will get tighter grip of the world by pretending that the world needs to be united (under their rule).

Jeesh, I feel so bad for Italy now.

They don't even have that big of a country, and I knew the unrest would prompt a full on invasion sooner or later.

Best of luck to my Italian brothers!

Looks like Italy is preparing for an onslaught of immigrants, in a way that should either speed up assimilation or encourage folks to look elsewhere for asylum:
Italy makes immigrants speak Italian

Many European nations are becoming stricter with immigration issues, it seems.

True, but the fact remains that we cannot simply send them back. It often takes ages and these immigrants even remove their fingerprints so their identities cannot be stored in centralized databases. The bottom line is that detention centers are overcrowded, illegal immigrants roam through Europe and disappear from the radar. Expulsion procedures often last years making the problem even worse.

i dont want to hear your cries; because the implications of your lack of respect for the global community you try to be involved in economically is insulting.

I can't wait for National Socialism to take rise once again. I'm tired of third-worlders fleeing their wasteland to infest prosperous nations. No sympathy on this side of the world.
