See the first pictures of the hitherto unknown submarine in Sweden

www.vgtv.no

Here are the first pictures of the Soviet submarine that may have been at the bottom outside of Gotland in Sweden since the 70 - or 80-s. The submarine was discovered by chance in 2009, but then thought it was a matter of wreckage from other submarines. Now it turns out that this is a hitherto unknown submarine

Nice video of the sub if you follow the link. The Swedish government does not want to rescue the sub, speculations are that the Swedes sunk it with depth-charges while chasing it in the 70 - or 80-s. In the video the sub has some visible damage but is pretty much in one piece and looks like it is in shallow water too. What happened to the crew is not said. The sub is 76 meter (about 249 feet) long and of the Russian "Whiskey"-class

Nice find.

Interesting. They haven't posted what the name or numeric designation of the submarine is/was. I guess maybe it's so crusted-over that they haven't found it yet.

Here's a (non-video) news article ...
Soviet Submarine discovered in Swedish waters

Here's a link to some pictures of the submarine, taken underwater ...

I thought this was identified as a soviet sub long ago, it wasn't sunk by the Swedes but it ran aground, somewhere back in the very early 80's.

edit to add:
Soviet submarine S-363
The other times they fired depth charges they didn't sink anything (or so they say)

That was not the same incident, but that also was a sub of the same class.

I was just going by memory, I was in the Navy back in the 80's, I could only recall hearing of just the one Soviet sub that ran aground, in spite of their attempts to sink the ones that entered their waters. The Swedes definitely saw this as a serious threat.

That's not the S363.
From your wiki-link:

The boat was stuck on the rock for nearly 10 days. Eventually, on November 5 it was hauled off the rocks by Swedish tugs and escorted to international waters, where it was handed over to the Soviet fleet.[2]

Here are a lot of pictures from that incident.

I'm also partially familiar with these subs, I remember as I was a kid hearing often about cat and mouse games in that region and other parts of the world on the news.

My wife is Swedish and has told me that Russian subs are frequently sneaking in to Swedish waters .Apparently they used to get paranoid , now it has become a bit of a joke in Sweden .
