ATS blocked on my schools network

Why are you trying to log onto ATS at a school computer anyways, school computers should be used for serious researching

I didn't miss your point or anyone else's. They ALWAYS go to an "online database categorizing sites." The list is not kept locally. It's centralized for easy updates. The splash screen is local, customizable, and usually not well done.

The potential conspiracy was ATS being categorized specifically in the most blocked category. Though, with no evidence besides that, it wouldn't go far as a theory, but would be interesting.

What in Heavens name does that first sentence even mean? What is a "most blocked" category? I've already told you how this works. ATS is in the conspiracy site category. sex.com (or whatever) is in the porn category. You check box whatever categories you want to block. Are you suggesting ATS was conspirationally placed in the porn category for a little extra blocking? That makes no sense.

I would guess I'm the ONLY person on this site that has actually worked as a sysadmin on these filters. I've evaluated them, bought them, installed them, and made them work. I'm trying to teach you guys how this thing works, physically. If you think your theorizing is better than my years of practical experience actually working with these things at all levels, you go right ahead and continue to pretend you're the expert.

Don't get too worked up about it. People tend to jump to conclusions about things they don't really understand instead of taking the time to learn about it. That's how it goes working in IT

Anyways, that about sums it up. At least when I was still working for the local school district, we didn't set up the filters for specific sites although that was an option. Whatever service the school is paying for in this particular case probably just threw ATS in with the thousands of other sites in their filters. It may even have been an ad on the page that has a source affiliated with a porn site and the filter blocked the whole site instead of just the ad.

I left school 2 years ago (I'm in the UK) and a lot of wesbites were categorised as 'pornography'
It is definitely a splash screen, as these sites ranged from certain games, to blogs and forums, I assume anything that they couldn't broardly categorise.

Generally I think the rule is any website that allows you to communicate with friends within the classroom, or elsewhere such as to cause a distraction, shouldnt be accessible, with the exceptions of YouTube and in your case, Tumblr - as these do serve as useful resources.

I don't think it is at all aimed solely at ATS.
Intact I bet if you went to your school technicians (or whoever controls the network) and asked why this website has been filtered as 'porn', they'd tell you the same thing.

First of all, ewwwwwwwww eww eww eww macs. I feel sorry for you. Anyways, my guess is it's blocked under the "Adult content" part of that category. Adult doesn't necessarily mean pornography, although there is often some overlap, but in this case it's probably something to do with the occasional photos of mutilations and the like that can be found here.

ATS, like Facebook, Twitter have alot of links and some networks recognize sites with alot of links as porn because it scans each site for link contents and not for content of the site itself.

I have to say, that's interesting. The very same looking splash screen appears on the computers at our school when I try to access ATS, and I too am in the tenth grade. Why do you presume it was blocked?

All education learning facilities internationally have the legal right to create, adopt, modify, alter, amend a policy pertaining to the access of the internet during school hours as you are there to learn and not surf the web playing Candystand.

Hi prolific,

At the risk of sounding boring, I would urge you to pay close attention during your schooling - knowledge is pure gold - even if you refute a lot of what you are taught, you need a basis on which to do that.

So maybe don't surf websites during school.

Well, the school is also teaching you more about politics and how the bureaucratic process works - even if it's not their intent in this case. More extreme cases of how the internet and politics interact are making quite the headlines in some parts of the world. It's bad when some places go as far as censoring adults on their own free time.

So now is time for some other education, although self-directed. May I suggest learning about proxies and VPNs? If you're not too worried about being pro-active and just want to catch up on some reading, there are ways that web pages can be cached to a memory stick for offline browsing. If it was your own laptop computer, I'd also suggest finding about other networks nearby and things like pringle-can antennas. Just because you're stuck somewhere all day doesn't mean you have to stick with their network.

And then you also need to learn about social engineering and some other subversive tactics, because if you're too nonchalant or go bragging about it, your fun in being able to use the computers freely with what you find out wont last long enough and who knows what other trouble that may lead to.
