What you're touching on there is sexual selection. In my opinion it is as important if not more important than natural selection. Also, it is just another example of how evolution is not a random process.

Well not as random as some may think.

That is where I believe some have problems understanding the processes involved with evolution. It is essentially driven by the environment but living animals with social structures also affect its path and interact with it.

The human being is a great example of this, We by pass evolution and find tech to ensure survival but ultimately the environment will win through and whether we adapt and survive or not what replaces us will not be superior or inferior just more able to survive and pass on their genes. Life will carry on with or without us.

Of course there are also people that choose to disregard the simple truth that evolution is a real force that shapes life and enables it to continue and exist because it insults their belief in our special status given to us by some deity or other and no evidence will ever change that.

My personal view is evolution describes the way life adapts and far from spoils the belief that god made everything fills me with awe at life’s resilience and beauty and through it we have been given a tool to understand its magnificence even if it is in a small way.

It does not prove or disprove a creator nor can it so I can never understand those that need a creator trying to disprove it. They really need to go bother the physics mob.

Hi Redtic,

that was very useful, thanks for posting this link... Watching this made me think my question wasnt so dumb after all, as stated earlier by no means am I an expert.

So now proposes the question, the origin of the our common ancestor.... I must do some further research on this.

when they say we evolved from monkeys and apes its not quite that litteral. they all broke off from a common ancester which formed the differnt groups that than went off evolving in thier own direction. our ancester split into twp groups one that went out on the pl.ains of africa and becamw what would eventualy become us and the other stayed in the jungle and eventualy became chimpanzees
