Go to tools, pictures, and upload the image onto ATS. Use the link ATS gives you on the avatar setup page. This should avoid any problems, also make sure you choose a background color.

You want your avatar URL to start like so "http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"

I never was able to see mine, until I chose a background color, try all 000000.

Maybe that will help you too, I can see your avatar btw.

Go here:
Upload Image
log in with your ATS username and password if need be

'Choose File' and upload the same.

Once the image file has been uploaded:

Click the Thumbnail to view it full-size.

Scroll to the bottom of the image and choose which option / use it's intended for...

Use as ATS Avatar:

Use as your mini-profile background on ATS:

Embed on ATS:

Copy/Paste the URL beneath such to the relevant Account Settings 'Avatar URL:' OR 'Mini-Profile background image' field ... then click 'Submit'. Done

If you're looking to use the image in a post on the boards...

just copy/paste the url/code below Embed on ATS
