Why hasn't the US made a formal apology to the Native Americans?

Well, first off.....America is considered a woman by most. You know the song,......."stand beside her, and guide her, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah blow".....anyway, you get the idea. Being married twice, I can authoritively say that women have a major problem with apologizing, even if they know they are wrong. They will rationalize it to the point in their own minds it is still right, or that it is still the other persons fault or somehow the other person (usually husband) made them wrong. On that cheery note (for all those who were going to get married and are now not going to......good for you BTW), I will say that America has made at least one formal apology and there are more in the wings.

America issues formal apology to Native Indians for treatment

One on it's way

Obama acnowledges need for Native American apology

there's a few more, but that should tide you over. It's just the way she is (America), if you want a formal apology, she will not get on the news and shout it out, it shows strength to those who want the apology, but to other rogue nations.....it shows weakness. I don't know who my ancestors are but I do know one thing........America in some way had something to do with the killing of many of them (probably nagged them to death......"America does not use torcher" ...my a$$). Not killed on the American Native scale, but therein lies my point, there wasn't many left to apologize to.

My guess is there still hoping for the real natives of north america to disapear or to join in the masses of slaves for the state, It is a sad fact.

i hope that the natives keep to there roots and keep there heads up high, to be proud to be who they are and where they come from. to not let there children fall prey to the slave mentality we live in.

just my 2 cents

I think its recognition more than anything else where Canada and the US need to fully acknowledge just how this continent was taken over and just what its built on. A real history lesson. Now I'm part Native myself and I'm not bitching about anything because I pay my dues and it took alot to get to where I'am today. Some of you really think we got it good don't you.....well you people obvious aint walking a mile in or shoes. How can a cycle be broken where the home you come from or came from was shattered due addictions, violence and everything else that comes with it when no one is the to offer any help but look at us in disgust????? Tell me how is it possible to get out that situation??? No one seems to identify the reality of what alot of people are faced but excuse the Natives for making it aware, we do it for our own and kind and everyone else. You'll kiss our asses later!!!!!!

I`ve lived with natives on and off the rez for years, they are a great people, spiritual, and smart, sadly alot of them fall into drugs or drinking because they are born into poverty, and/or very racially discriminated against. They didn't deserve what was done to them, and taken from them and it still is being done to this day! I have turned my back against mainstream society because what we are taught to believe is so wrong, and if it wasn't for it being drilled into our heads that people are different based on skin, and culture. We would be all living together peacefully.

The native people of Canada and the united states, deserve a huge apology. Many of them don't even complain they simply try to spread thier culture and knowledge, or adapt to the white man's ways for the good of thier family, and that's if they are lucky enough to be born into a family that isn't poor or ruined by the abusive substances that WE gave to them!

BTW That "apology" was just to make them look better, I learned first hand here in Canada that the first nations funding has been cut more and more over the past few years!

Its not only the native cultures that is getting wrongly done to this day, its everyone and anyone who is in the poverty belt. Theres way too much judgement in society and society teaches wrongly and that being said....if this is how were raised in a society then theres no way anyone can expect us to be pefect, anyone can express their own opinion but if you're not living the life then how can you empathize. Many of us are not liked because we get a break from taxes, we get funding for education, medical, dental, optical etc etc etc. Why hate on us when we weren't the ones who established these decisions???? Blame your damn government if you don't like it. I have to agree paying taxes is alot but it wouldn't be that way if the government decided ok lets rehabilitate the ones in the struggle who are addicted to drugs and alcohol and try to keep these people from commiting crimes and going to jail......really like c'mon man theres like how many Natives in jail across Canada and the majority doing time is Natives. We got money for war and military but no money for the poverty stricken souls....friggin amazing.

My oldest sister was sterilized against her will in 1978. She was only 18 years old. She had complications with her moon times. They put her in the hospital and the white doctor who was in his 60's, told my sister everything would be fine, and that a simple d&c would be performed to stop the ongoing moon times. When she woke up, she was told by a nurse, not the doctor, that a complication arose and they had to do a complete hysterectomy on her. My sister and my mother were so horrified. Nothing could be done though. My sister never got to be the mother she dreamed of being. She never got to know what it is to give birth. It was stolen from her by someone who felt Native women needed to be sterilized. My sister has adopted, and her life has gone on, and she's very happy now, but that wound inside of her will never completely heal.

In 1979, my cousin had a baby boy at the age of 16. She wanted desperately to keep her little son, and was worried about how to take care of him. At this time Mormon missionaries had descended on our reservation and were going door to door speaking to families. They preyed upon my cousin and her situation and kept trying to talk her into giving her baby away to them, and place him with a good Mormon family. She told them no, but they kept coming back and back until they finally broke her down and talked her into adopting out her baby boy to a Mormon family. They promised she could see her little son again, and to help her, but instead they took advantage of her ability to read, she signed papers for a closed adoption, thinking it was OPEN. They took her baby boy and she has never seen him again.

These are some under handed, horrifying tactics done to my close relatives during my lifetime.

NO apology is ever going to satisfy the pain done to me and mine, nor to anyone else's family.

No one gives a damn about Native people. They don't care about our sacred places, our sacred hocokas, or what we want for our future. We are fighting NOW for the protection of Bear Butte. Please research the issues going on, I have little time to write it all out right now.

We have fake shamans like Kiesha Crowther going around lying about being Native and charging for ceremonies and telling people she's shaman over Lakota and Kootenai.

The genocide of people may have ended but now we fight a different kind of genocide. It's cultural genocide and it's theft of what we have left. What we have left to give to our children. We fight to keep our lands and we fight to keep our ceremonies in a protected way.

Obama lied about helping the tribes. There's a lot more to this. So much more. So many other tribes going through problems.

It's not over for us so I don't see how an apology is going to do anything.

obama might if he promised not to.

I don't want his apologies. I just want him to hold to his word. But he won't because he's proven himself spineless and untrustworthy. He can move on down the line now with all the other liars who have lied to the tribes in this country.

"This is the Eight Sign: You will see many youth, who wear their hair long like my people, come and join the tribal nations, to learn their ways and wisdom.

I'd rather live in a wigwam and wake every morning to the sounds of the birds and the breeze through the trees then sirens, traffic, alarm clocks, etc... I'd be happiest gardening, foraging, hunting, and fishing to support myself rather then slaving for someone else benefit, money to pay 'bills' to live, and buy useless luxury items with what may or may not(credit) be leftover... I'd rather worship the Mother Earth, a living all powerful entity who is ever present, then an invisible God. I could go on, but it's off topic. Sorry.

I think the governments avoid formal apologies and conflicts with Native Americans because they fear their own people fleeing to side with the Natives.

Have you ever been on a reservation? Are you kidding me? Obviously you haven't. It's not as pretty as you think it is.

That's amazing, because I don't get a govt check every month. I work for what I have and so does my husband, and so does the rest of my family. I know this is going to come as a shock to you, but not all Natives are getting govt checks every month and sitting around.

And I'm pretty darn sure there are other races besides Natives who sit around picking up a govt check too.

Why should the US apologize? for what? Their lives are crappy because they make it that way. They will wind up killing themselves off anyway. They consist of 10 % of my states population but they make up 50% of daily deaths in NM.

They dont even take care of there own people.

I just hate the way people think Indians are special. Like they are a mystical race or something. I knew an Indian that would bang white women because he told them he was a "healer". lol!!! they fell for it every time.

This is why we don't need indians on reservations. In the modern world you need an education, a solid one. Growing up on a reservation will scar a lot of people and make it hard for them to transition. That's my point all along. If we want to help em then give em an education. Giving em loads of money to live on their reservations just lengthens the problem.

Is that what we tell white people living in tent cities, because they lost their homes and jobs? I don't.

Yep and I know a white doctor who took away my sisters ability to bear children because in the 70's they wanted to either experiment or sterilize Native women.

Coin flips both ways, friend. I know plenty of whites who abandon their elders in nursing homes and do not take care of their grandparents, but you won't see this in my family. Please don't generalize us all into one description or category. I don't do this to other races either.

I think it makes me mad, this thread, I created a monster of hurt-feelings and alot of racisms, how many times have we heard about casinos on here?

Nah. I've seen these types of racist comments before when it comes to any discussion about Natives. Most want to come in the thread and make a shocking nasty comment without listening. Their ancestors did not listen and their children don't listen either. If one person hears you then that's enough. I'm not surprised to see the racist comments, or the hate for Natives that still exists in this world.

I myself do not want or need an apology. An apology would never be enough. Same as apologizing to blacks for slavery. You can't expect a sorry, to cover it. Recognition, understanding, listening, and not hating, that is where the change comes.

Those who don't learn from history are condemned to repeat it, or something like that.

There's a difference between honest people like yourself and others who're just taking advantage of the apologies and moneys that come their way to sit back and enjoy the good life without doing anything to better themselves. That's why you get people being skeptical because they've seen a lot of that. Bad apples can make the whole lot smell bad, you know?

That's why I say you can't keep pointing at the past. At some point people who suffered have to pick themselves up like everyone else has to and build the roads that're necessary to succeed. You know that native americans slaughtered white men too? Americans are not the only ones to blame here. And yet they have given the natives a lot of moneys over the years AND respect but yet the apologies and paybacks still have to keep coming? Why? When will it end?

IMHO we've come to a point where the natives on hte reservations just want moneys because that's the only way they know how to live. If we're going to give them moneys for free like this then we should at least REQUIRE that they use this money to send their children to universities.

And btw when I say moneys what I mean is all of hte exemptions and land they get with few strings attached. There should be more strings attached so that it doesn't get abused.

Just to let you know...Yahoo Answers is not a good source.
The US DID appologize officially to its native people
This is from the NATIVE AMERICAN TIMES....perhaps you should be reading that instead of Yahoo Answers.

"WASHINGTON (AP) – The United States formally apologized to American Indian tribes Wednesday for “ill-conceived policies” and acts of violence committed against them."
Site I found this at: www.nativetimes.com...:apology-to-tribes-us-apologizes-to-american-indians-for-mistreatment&cati d=54&Itemid=30
