It's pretty obvious really.
Kurt Russel was Disney's (the company's) most successful child star.
He was also, even then, a total bad ass. Short version: he was into race car driving and doing awesome stuff in general with all his Disney money.
Walt, in what was left of his mind, was leaving Russell in charge of the Walt Disney company.
Never mind that he probably didn't have any of the legal authority to do it, and certainly didn't go through the proper procedure or anything like
It's like the WIlly Wonka move. Leave the company to some awesome kid who would really do crazy awesome stuff with it. Disney the company was exactly
that kind of company, and Disney the man was exactly that kind of man.
