Because Elenin has a long period, low inclination orbit (which means it would spend a while traversing the asteroid belt), some astronomers decided it would be a good idea to see if it would make any close approaches to any asteroids. They used Artemis, an orbital simulator, which predicted close approaches to 4 asteroids. They hope to detect gravitational effects on the comet but are not very optimistic about being able to do so because the effects will be so slight.
The first asteroid was passed on February 28th.
