Possessing an aircraft carrier is seen as a sign of power and prestige and has been since WW2. China wants to be in this club and it looks like they will be joining soon.

I see nothing in either picture that screams 'aircraft carrier' except the obviously near complete one in the top picture. Interestingly it appears to have both an angled deck and a ski jump!

i can actually see where you comeing from the top right one is definatly a carrier unless part of it is the quay.
the second one is NOT carrier its a frieghtor, a carrier is much larger and that ship looks exsactly like most frieghters in the oceans today.

Eddie the Eagles coming their way!
All seirousness, yeah i can see the appearance of an Aircraft Carrier, I cant exactly see the Hull of the other being built to be honest. Could just be a merchant ship.. cruise liner or anythin else china could find a use for

- Oh bloody hell here we go. War perv alert.

So China - maybe - starts to build two mid-spec aircraft carriers - which means they're years away from being fully operational.

These are 'versus' the umteen US ones and suddenly the American posters here think the Chinese are moments away from committing nuclear suicide.

Some folks are so short of any kind of perspective.

The one being built is an oil carrying ship. You can tell by the amount of piping that is visable on the deck and the superstructure is going to be placed in the stern of the vessel.

The one to the right is definately a Russian aircraft carrier. You can tell that by the shape of the island and the ski jump at the bow. Didn't the Chinese purchase one of the old carriers?

There's one carrier there. I doubt the second being built is a carrier. Well so what if Chgina's building them? Should we just nuke them because they are becoming a big threat! lol

china has no interest in takeing america on any way they jsut out to look after thier country.
CH yeah i thought that too with that main pipe down the middle is a big give away but i thought it could just be part of the construction gear?

The FAS site
www.fas.org...

Doesn't list any PLAN ships that could even remotely be classified as aircraft carriers. They do list two types of aircraft though.

1- four J10 II - Carrier Fighter bomber
2- four JH7 IIC - Carrier SSM Attack

Why they would have these models of aircraft without a carrier, I don't know. Maybe they have leased the Russian one but it's not OFFICIALLY thiers? Wiser heads will have to figure that one out.

But back to the first picture. How good of a source is this from? The picture is fuzzy, and the shadows on the carrier appear to me to be different than those elsewhere in the picture.

And the carrier itself appears somewhat small in relation to the other ships in the picture. Of course the US and Russia aren't the only countries that make and use aircraft carriers, and some of the others are fairly small. Could this be an Indian carrier? I think they have 3 or 4. (Names start with a V?)

Also, there is no activity on or around the carrier and it is docked at a civilian pier. Anyone who has been in the navy will tell you how unusual those two things are!

I don't know, but it appears to me that either this ship is decommisioned, or not yet in service. It isn't the usual color that the PLAN uses, and there seems to be alot of rust on it.

I think it is either a foriegn vessel on a visit, a newly aquired vessel that is not active, or the picture is a hoax.

The vessel in the second picture is definately a tanker of some kind. No doubt about it.

The name of the pictures should have been our first clue!

I don't know why I didn't see it at first, but it just jumped out at me.

aorlst.jpg =

aor - auxillary oiler replenishment ( a standard class of navy oilers, served on one myself).

lst = landing ship tank (another standard ship class)

this is in reference to the two vessels under construction. The larger one is a tanker, we can all see that, and that is what an aor is. If you look at the front of the smaller vessel you can see the trademark flat bow of an lst.

This still doesn't explain the carrier though.

Did anyone consider that someone might just have decided to park their carrier there and that the one depicted in the top pic isn't actually chinese. It could well be that the Russians are giving the Chinese a look at theirs in an attempt to sell them that one or one that they will build, probably the latter because the Russians probably want to keep their hands on their one aircraft carrier.

the aircraft carrier in the top photo is the Varyag, a Kuznetsov Class vessel sold by the Ukraine to a private concern. it's docked in Dalian, and is supposedly awaiting conversion into a casino.

www.varyagworld.com...

as for the two ships under construction, Montana's explanation seems convincing.

I can guarantee that I know less than any of you about aircraft carriers or nautica in general. But from reading the link provided by Koji, it does seem like the PLAN has at leas a passing interest in carries. Chinluck holding, from the article, is not behaving in a way that seems oriented toward profitabililty. Which makes me think they are an arm of the Navy.

Perhaps they just want to study the carrier, to find vulnerabilities, rather than wanting to build their own????

Or maybe they are going into the movie business????

The French ha yes no surprise there as they would like nothing better then to see the US get defeated no wander they would give the Chinese a carrier but I wouldn't worry about French carriers like devil said they have a tendency well how can I put this nicely they SUCK in a boat! You would be safer in a fishing battle then a French carrier
