From the look of things its already lost there.. A totalitarian state creaped in while everyone slept.. Have a suspicion that the fusion centers are a more up to date version of the old soviet lubyanka.. And that the data mining is only a small part of what goes on inside them..

discostu123,

A fusion center can have multiple meanings, but in this case we are likely referring to 'services' contracted as "security services" where they purposefully identify targets (people, organizations, etc) and then proceed to pick up everything - social website activity, blogging posts, library records, --- perhaps other more private info - and create 'fused' reports allowing the 'contractee' to use it for their needs. law suits, prosecution, harassment, background checks, etc.

Since they are not 'governmental' agencies they are not constrained by certain laws and can 'target' people in pursuit of the information where a tax-payer funded operation would be liable for charges....

In other words "corporate intelligence agencies."

A Fusion Center is a Shared Data center. They cross with FBI/CIA/DES/DHS/NCIC and all the other Law Enforcement Agencies. It was leaked last year that a Data Base is being created that gets your name into one of these Fusion Centers.

How?
Google Bumper Stickers, Militia monitoring, New Mobile Finger Print Scanners and the List continues.
A simple traffic stop for what may have been a tail-light Out. Is now a data mining of ALL vehicle occupants and being run through all information in the Fusion Centers. i.e. if you have a match to a Friend that made a call to Palestine... YOUR FLAGGED. and so the history starts.

so, a government funded system going under the banner of 'anti-terrorism' or whatever - but actually being used to monitor the general populace for some kind of hidden agenda?

I'm just into Information sharing. I believe in security. But I also believe that this is headed towards a violation of the Constitution. Next with the REAL ID they will want cute little tattoo's on our arms and telling us the Needles are Clean today so don't worry.

They covered Fusion Centers on Jesse Ventura's show. It was such a breakthrough episode that it got taken off air from the repeat loops. DHS even went so far as to delete it off people's TIVOs and DVRs. Total cover up effort got blown wide open.

Fusion centers are evil. The whole point is for local police to report anything suspicious to the fusion center. Then the fusion center pulls as much information as they can in a couple of hours. Then they determine whether to send it on to the FBI.

If the FBI gets it they can either declare that it is unimportant, important, or undecided. If it is undecided the file goes in to a computer and the agents data mine all the information they can from public and private databases. They can do this for up to five years I believe. If it is deemed important they do the same thing plus get field agents involved in looking. If they deem it unimportant then they are supposed to erase it.

For more info on fusion centers and the new police state read Monitoring America, A Hidden World Growing Beyond Control, and National Security INC from The Washington Post.

From Monitoring America

The system, by far the largest and most technologically sophisticated in the nation's history, collects, stores and analyzes information about thousands of U.S. citizens and residents, many of whom have not been accused of any wrongdoing.

The government's goal is to have every state and local law enforcement agency in the country feed information to Washington to buttress the work of the FBI, which is in charge of terrorism investigations in the United States.

The article is actually pretty disturbing if you read the whole thing.

From A Hidden World Growing Beyond Control

The top-secret world the government created in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, has become so large, so unwieldy and so secretive that no one knows how much money it costs, how many people it employs, how many programs exist within it or exactly how many agencies do the same work.

These are some of the findings of a two-year investigation by The Washington Post that discovered what amounts to an alternative geography of the United States, a Top Secret America hidden from public view and lacking in thorough oversight. After nine years of unprecedented spending and growth, the result is that the system put in place to keep the United States safe is so massive that its effectiveness is impossible to determine.

From National Security INC

To ensure that the country's most sensitive duties are carried out only by people loyal above all to the nation's interest, federal rules say contractors may not perform what are called "inherently government functions." But they do, all the time and in every intelligence and counterterrorism agency, according to a two-year investigation by The Washington Post.

What started as a temporary fix in response to the terrorist attacks has turned into a dependency that calls into question whether the federal workforce includes too many people obligated to shareholders rather than the public interest -- and whether the government is still in control of its most sensitive activities. In interviews last week, both Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and CIA Director Leon Panetta said they agreed with such concerns.

The Post investigation uncovered what amounts to an alternative geography of the United States, a Top Secret America created since 9/11 that is hidden from public view, lacking in thorough oversight and so unwieldy that its effectiveness is impossible to determine.

Nothing like an OP-ed authored by a person who pulls his information from the website publicintelligence.net.

Care to take a guess as to what kind of site it is?

The article contains bogus / out of context information to say the least. Fusion centers are not as sinister as being made out to be. The MIAC is just one. They are central points for data anlysis from trends across the nation.

For instance several incidents that occured in northern states where people figured out they could make cyanide gas by buying household chemicals and mixing them in their cars with the windows up. Not only did the gas kill the person very quickly, its also killed a few firstresponders.

That info was sent to the "fusion" center where the info was forwarded back out as an Officer / First responder safety bulletin, and it provided information as to what to look for when approaching similar scenes.

In the long run it is about much more than internet searches. In the article "Monitoring America" they mention that in Memphis they have the electric company send a list of all customers to the police every month. This is supposedly so they can reduce the number of raids on the wrong houses and find criminals more easily. Do you really think that a drug dealer on the run is going to be staying at a home with electricity in his own name? Rule #2 of drug dealing is, "do not put anything in your name."

They also have an example in the article where a man taking a picture of a tourist attraction is turned in. He took pictures then got back in his car and made a phone call. A short time later his family showed up. Yet he is now in the database of a fusion center for acting suspicious.

It may be internet searches and ramblings this time. However, it is part of a much larger issue. Americans have lost the right to privacy anywhere. Their whole lives can be data mined and scrutinized for taking a phot in the wrong place. The fourth amendment has disappeared.

Of course, we are to blame in part for our over reliance on computer technology. Also we must accept responsibility for not fighting harder to stop it from happening.
