Barack Obama tells Gaddafi: Libya violence must stop

www.guardian.co.uk

Barack Obama has warned the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi that he faces the prospect of international sanctions over violence against demonstrators, and condemned Gaddafi's actions as outrageous and unacceptable.

Obama is sending secretary of state Hillary Clinton to Europe to discuss what actions can be taken to stop the violence, and to take part in a meeting of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Obama is suggesting sanctions and asks his administration for a list of options. What can a president do? Advice: Don't let a good crisis go to waste.

Maybe this is the war he needs to make his mark. Obama is looking strong for re-election in 2012 now. If he pulls this off he will rebound as a good leader.

He is?
To anyone who loves freedom and decency, he isn't, sorry.

Licking the boots of banks while destroying the constitution while destroying the economy isn't what I would call ``strong`` for reelection.

Obama should stop with the words, send a few drones in, locate Gadafi and his sons, send a B-2 with a bunch of cruise missiles, take him out.

Problem solved. Who would complain? Nobody.

Gadafi speaks of himself at the third person. Sorry but this is a sign of mental illness. The guy is good for a mental asylum... and he runs a country with chemical weapons for god sake. Words won't solve this, especially when the guy hired mercenaries to murder 3000+ civilians.

Short of invading Libya, nothing can be done except apply the diplomatic pressure.

I for one DO NOT want to see the US or the UK dragged into a third war, before the current two are wrapped up!

This event shows the marked contrast between Obama and Bush, as Bush would have gone on some grand-standing charade while leading the US into another disastrous war, at least Obama kept his mouth shut and analyzed the situation.

Indiscriminate bombing never works, and killing civilians that way would make the US every bit as Gadhafi.

In fairness, the economy was pretty well destroyed before he was inaugurated.
As for his trampling of the constitution, aside from Ron Paul, all the recent Presidents and candidates do it or will do it.

He doesn't need to invade Libya to assure reelection. John Thune announced he will not run in 2012, that Obama is looking too strong to beat.

The violence needs to stop is simply rhetoric. Although i do wonder if Gaddafi has hardened bunkers. If the intelligence agencies had actionable intelligence, it seems like it would be a political bonus to assassinate the prick. Although I highly doubt Obama would do that, since it would be against International law. You're not supposed to directly target foreign heads of state. If he doesn't go into exile, I think they'll just try and isolate Libya diplomatically.

well, at least GW bush can prove (and has proven) beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was actually eligible to be elected as president of the United States.

Yeah.. we'll stay out of the internal affairs of sovereign nations so long as the oil keeps flowing.

To think the go-ahead to have him assassinated isn't already in place, from many different countries including their own military, is just crazy...

Only a matter of time. 41 year rule?... Yikes.

And since when the US government cares about violations of international law? They only care about it when it's time to do things to help people or what?

Ignore international law to torture people, it's alright. Ignoring international law to save thousands of people is bad on the other hand right? This is sick. The guy ain't a head of state, he's a war criminal. Take him out.

sure he would have. he would have kept his mouth shut, done some analysis, went on vacation to hawaii, played some golf, gone to spain, analyzed it some more, had sex with his gay boyfriend reggie love, and then played some more golf.

thats exactly what democrats and progressives do when innocent people are being slaughtered by madmen.

well, except bill clinton was orally sodomizing an intern young enough to be his daughter when the rwandan massacres were happening.

Obama has no say in if we take out gadaffi. Just like in Iraq, we weren't supposed to fire unless fired upon. You have two trucks loaded with weapons and armed individuals coming toward you...dang right we lit them up. Against the* rules* yes. Is anyone going to stop you? No.

And i can imagine the Russians are thinking the same for the usa government, why not send a russian bear bomber and drop a bomb well we are at it? or maybe drop few bombs where the former bill Clinton lives? or bush for that matter.

I guess you have no pity for what america did to Iraq or Serbia for that matter, the riots or the revolutions are manufactured by the greater middle east project.

Words won't solve this, especially when the guy hired mercenaries to murder 3000+ civilians.

And So whats difference between the usa government which hires and bribes terrorist groups to do Americas covert agaisnt the law missions? including killing civilians.

Like in yugoslavia america brought in terrorist groups in bosnia to fight with america agaisnt the serb civilians
no of course not that you didn't see on CNN or Fox and how these terrorists were beheading Civilians, while playing there heads like a soccer ball.

The terrorists were brought in by the US Air Force.

Exactly. Get some arab allies like Egypt or Jordan or Kuwait to slap an Arab face on it, and send in the carriers and landing ships. Protect the people there by wiping out all loyalist forces. The Libyan military is about worthless, only good against unarmed civis

Obama's an idiot...sanction what? They have nothing more to lose, what resources do they plan on sanctioning and by who? Does he have UN approval to sanction Lybia?....NO What he's really saying is he wants to punish the people of Lybia if Gaddafi doesn't step down. A sole US sanction isn't going to make any impact or resolution of the situation at hand but one lazer guided missle would. Cost...a blue light special, result a country of happy campers.

I think you will have to await word of all clear, as far as US and several other Countries citizens having left, before you will get decisive military action... Id just like to say he really does have alot on his plate, and im well pleased hes in power instead of some you posting while these Countries are undergoing this eye opening change...

I think I shall feel quite afraid though, if Obama somehow receives credit for the New World which could emerge out of all this when its said and done... Even more so if hes perceived as doing so peacefully... gotta wonder whats in the works for the "Peace Bringer" former President Clinton... Know what im saying?
