Cuba Registers World´s First Vaccine against Lung Cancer

I found this article on the Cuban News Agency CUBA (ACN) website last night while looking for interesting news stories happening around the world, I thought I would share it with the ATS community.

Cuba Registers World´s First Vaccine against Lung Cancer HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 11 (acn) Cuba registered the first therapeutic vaccine against advanced lung cancer and its effectiveness is being tested in other tumors such as prostate, uterus and breast ones. Cuban News Agency The drug called "CIMAVAX-EGF" acts directly on the tumor, unlike traditional treatments focused on chemo and radiation which are nonspecific and attack infected and healthy cells, the Cuban specialist Dr. Gisela Gonzalez said. In a statement to the newspaper Trabajadores, Dr. Gonzalez who is the project leader said that many anti-cancer vaccine candidates were in the third phase of clinical trials because they do not show efficacy. However "CIMAVAX-EGF" converts the advanced tumor into a under control chronic disease. The vaccine is administered after conventional therapy when the patient is considered terminally ill without any other therapeutic alternative. "CIMAVAX-EGF" is composed by the Epidermal Growth Factor, linked to another protein that helps the immune system to create the desired immune response against the "EGF". The body of those vaccinated produces antibodies that recognise and bind specifically to "EGF", avoiding its binding to the receptor and the beginning of cell proliferation. The effect is a decrease in tumor growth, depending upon each patient's response. Conceived by the Centre for Molecular Immunology and the Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Centre after 15 years of research, "CIMAVAX-EGF" is currently progressing in its registration in other nations, the expert said.

I wonder if doctors or researchers here in the US have looked at a drug similar to this? Seems after so many years of research they should have found not only a vaccine but a cure as well.

You cannot have a cure for cancer... what would Cancer researchers do then?

To much money in Research and Treatments.

The line goes:

Treatment Not Cure.... cures do not make money.

Why do you think we haven't cured anything unless it kills you quick and you can't make money from it?

Long term degenerative illness = $$$$$$


Only way your getting a cure is to STOP all government money for research immediately and put that money into a REWARD fund. You cure, you get the Bounty and then the people own it to manufacture and distribute.

My Mom passed away from lung cancer last month on the 21st, She went into the hospital and doctors insisted she undergo radiation treatment. She was 81 and had terminal cancer I disagreed with the doctors but my brother had power of attorney so they went ahead and started the treatments. Only a week before she entered the hospital she was walking, talking and taking care of herself. The treatments lasted 8 days and she went to hospice, where she died the next day. Long story short..I agree with you their is no money in cures, just treatments. I believe in my heart she could have lived in less pain and probably a little longer with just a plain old morphine drip. But what do I know /shrug

I think it's a crime against humanity that profit comes before people..

How stupid!
Don't they know that there is far more money to be made
in the treatment?
If you keep someone from getting cancer, you make money ONCE!
If you treat their cancer, you keep making money till they die.
Hasn't Cuba learned ANYTHING from the U.S.?????

A friend of mine went to Cuba cause he heard a guy down there was curing thousands of people with the poison of a blue scorpion, the guy asked for a bag of IV to be mixed with the chemicals, couple months later and weeks of treatment, friend has no trace of cancer, i also heard of a lady with cancer that spread all over her body, doctors here gave her 3 moths to live, she survived 1 year and 8 months with the treatment over in Cuba.

This is a huge discovery especially for terminally ill patients. It's rare to see such an advancement made in a country that can barely afford to feed its people also. I just hope it's not some sort of publicity stunt to draw attention to Cuba.

As far as seeing this in America... we probably had this same formula thirty years ago, but like free energy, the previous models of electric cars and a possible cure for AIDS. All have been shelved because big business could make more money treating patients rather than curing... although if you cure the terminally ill only to have them chronically get cancers. There's a pretty penny in that too.

I bet this vaccine will never be "allowed" to be used all over the world!

Or maybe there will be a new study which declares its not working...and maybe a little accident happens to the inventors...

I have no idea if it's a publicity stunt in my mind I think it is probably a genuine attempt to find a vaccine to prevent cancer, I agree this is a very poor country that can barely feed it's people. I'm sure for Cuba it's cheaper to try and prevent cancer as it must take vasts amounts of money to use conventional treatments as Cuba provides free health care to all it's citizens. But this is just a guess on my part, but it would seem to make sense. I'm sure the Cuban government would stand to make a bundle of cash on this as well if they were able to prove this works with the clinical studies currently going on. I hope it works..it's about time they found a vaccine.

Yes true that..how sad we are as a race sometimes..I think more people are waking up right now all over the world. Oppression, greed and lack of freedom..people are over it all around the world. Theirs a chance to change right now, in the 60's we almost got it right but we sold out to corporate America, Now the cycle repeats again hopefully we will evolved enough as a race to move into a new age without a need for religions or fear of a common ideal to move humanity forward.

Sure, except that the only way research laboratories can afford to do their research is through government or industry grants.

I'm sorry for your loss. We went through the exact same thing about 6 months ago.

My Mom passed away from lung cancer last month on the 21st, She went into the hospital and doctors insisted she undergo radiation treatment. She was 81 and had terminal cancer I disagreed with the doctors but my brother had power of attorney so they went ahead and started the treatments.

Same situation with us but thankfully the siblings that wanted the radiation treatment done were voted down by the other siblings (me included) that knew it wouldn't help and would only destroy what little quality of life my Mom had left.

She passed peacefully with her family by her side a few weeks later.

Thank you so much for that and my condolences to you as well, How wonderful she got to live out her last moments with the people she loved and I for one agree that you made the right decision for her.

A similar situation happened with a family member. She was 73 years old when they diagnosed her with lung cancer. She was perfectly healthy in all other regards. She still worked five days a week because she wanted to be active. She lived on her own and took care of all of her daily responsibilities herself. She even tended her own garden for five or six hours every weekend when it was needed.

They diagnosed her with lung cancer. They insisted that she needed radiation and chemo. Eight days after the first treatment she had a massive stroke. She lost all verbal functions and most of her mobility. After a month of "recovery" they insisted on starting treatment again. They said that it was the only option besides taking her lung. They didn't want to do that because they were afraid another stroke could leave the remaining lung useless.

One week after restarting treatment she had a clot enter her lung and kill her.

I have never seen chemo and radiation alone save anybody. In my opinion if it is inoperable the chances of surviving are about 0%. We need real answers and not more profit driven bull.

I have heard in the Cuban radio that they have cures and vaccines for many diseases that we (U.S.) do not have and they ask them selves, why the U.S. doesn't give these to its people. By the way, to the person that said that Cuba is a poor country, the Cuban dollar is worth more than the U.S. dollar. $1.00 = 0.93 Cuban$.
I believe that what people are saying here is the truth, there is no money in curing diseases, there is more money to be made by treating it.

My condolences on the loss of your family member and I totally agree with you and I for one am so sick and tired of being taken advantage of by monsters who put profit over people, This is such an outrage it simply must stop. If Cuba a tiny country can afford to fund the research for a vaccine for cancer why can't we?
