Diania cactiformis

this 520 million year old fossil is helping scientists understand where the exoskeleton came from.

at around 540 million years ago, arthropods developed this armour due to increased predation.

this walking cactus is said to be the missing link between arthropods and lobopods (soft worms with legs)

contrary to previous assumptions, the exoskeleton seems to have originated on the legs, opposed to the body

as originally thought.

Ain't evolution great!! And since we know very little about previous (and current) species, every find is quite amazing!!

That's amazing, you find out something new every day. The gaps in the fossil record just keep getting smaller and smaller

Nice find.No matter how much they find, the fossil record just gets curiouser and curiouser.
