The people live in misery, and have for quite some time, so that we wouldn't be affected.
I suppose it is time we all were. It's more important to me that they are actually free from tyranny.

That's the thing about empires.
They need fuel for their oven, and it's slaves who shovel in the coal.

Even if the people who benefit are oblivious.

The Libyan people certainly deserve to be free! but "khadaffy duck" can step down and hand power over to the next muslim whackjob without pulling a Saddam hissy fit and destryoing the envionment and global economy. Or he can leave like "Anwar Sadat": a few armed disgruntled soldiers riddle him with bullets and the next cruel islamic dictator can take over.I see your obvious "America is the problem" tone:The people of the middleast are by far their own worst enemies.

You got your History wrong... Sadat was not an Islamic dictator. He was a liberal socialist, who had democratic support of Egyptians in general. He was just as Islamic as any US President you can think of was a Christian.

He was shot by Islamic fanatics, the Muslim Brotherhood, who had an history of being CIA assets, and replaced by a dictator. He was at odds with USA and Israel for nationalizing the Oil industry, and being a bit too much on the fence between the Soviets and the US.

It's the only move he has left

Perhaps, there's great concern that he may yet retain some kind of access to chemical or biological WMD, and/or perhaps a few scud missiles? Given his history (e.g. 2009 nuclear weapons radiological crisis where he abandoned highly radiological material in inappropriate packaging on a desert runway) and credentials, I wouldn't totally rule out misuse (dirty-bomb/scorched earth type antics) with some radiological material either.

It appears unclear how much air-power he has access/control of...but if he lashes out things could yet get far nastier than simply oil-pipe disruption, and even the unthinkable brutality already unleashed on his people.

I heard that currently there is at least one rescue ship/ferry sitting in port or close to shore loaded with refugees but unable to move due to poor weather - talk about a sitting duck? Are his warships still firing into shore? Any news on whose side they are on now?

I fear that pressure from other countries, and his fury with the situation in the East and possibly even a no-fly-zone or something could force him into such dramatic gestures.

We are seeing more and more of TPTB (the power that were) - getting more desperate on their last stand to destroy as much as possible.
