Normal in your house maybe. It sounds to me like your son has a couple of issues of his own that need to be addressed,

Hauling the kid out in cuffs is a little on the extreme side in my humble opinion, but I can see where a pic of a gun going off and words "teacher's must die" might be cause for serious concern. If no action at all is taken, then the kid turns around and pulls a Columbine, then everybody would be going nuts on the authorities as well. This was a situation that had no easy answers imho.

The correct way to handle it is for the parents, school and perhaps the authorities to sit down and TALK! The kid did not kill or harm anyone.

Second he is already under professional care AGAIN the authorities/schools should have TALKED to the one person who might have had a clue as to the correct way to handle this - the DOCTOR.

SHEESH,

Kids have anger and feelings of hostility all the time, are we going to arrest every single kid or person who says, "I am so angry I could kill you" ????

That is all this is, the same type of expression only in pictures by a child who had no other way to express his anger harmlessly.

Yeah, i heard about this earlier somewhere. WTF, is going on with our country that we are taking little kids away in cuffs from their houses at night over anything they wrote down and tried to toss in elementary school. This has gotten so far out of hand. Well since the principal decided later to press charges, i think the parents should find a lawyer and decide later to sue the hell out of the school district. I'm talking some figure so digusting that a message is sent to school districts everywhere that this type of behavior needs to be handled in a different way. Something astronomical like a $500million suit. I'm not saying they deserve that kind of money. But first you have to come correct to these school districts who don't seem to be able to think for themselves anymore. Especially with the kid following his therapist advice and working out his anger on paper, before throwing it away.

Crim, Hi, are you privy to more than anyone else on the net? The report is very insubstantial, but one website says he was charged with interfering with staff and other students. All of this may be bs at this moment, but if true then the picture may be a red herring anyway.

The height of police state Gestapo actions shines through once again.
To all of you members who think that this in some slight way was a warrented act, my message to you is stop being such sissies. That boy is more of a man than most of you right now.

When I was in kindergarten, our teacher told us to use some clay that she provided and to make something nice and pretty to be fired in the oven. Many kids made plates and bowls. Some where shaped like turtles and nice little animals and all kinds of wonderfully cute little things. As for what I made...

I took all the clay that I could get and set about making the biggest battle war scene that I could possibly muster. I made cannons, sandbags for bunkers, and I made soldiers. Then I commenced to fighting this war with the clay with many sound effects and explosions galore. I had broken cannons and blown open bunkers. I had soldiers whose heads were blown off. Whose bodies were torn in half! And my laughing teacher fired this carnage just as I left it.

So here I was in the end left with my huge mound of death and distructions that was only fit for the garbage can...
But did this make me a bad kid?
Did this mean that I should be led away in handcuffs?
Hell no it didn't, I was just a boy who does what boys do.. Playing!

Now look at what I turned out to be...
A man who despises the very thought of War.
I man who thinks that War is wrong in all cases.
A man who loves life.

Leave this poor boy alone you fools.
Leave this poor boy alone you Police State.

There mustn't be much going on in that community if the best use of taxpayer's money is to arrest an 11 year old who has done nothing to actually harm anyone. If there ever was an argument for cutting back spending on excessive security and control, this is it.

I'm glad they got to this kid before he killed us all.

The state loves us and cares only for our safety. Let us praise it.

Crim, Hi, are you privy to more than anyone else on the net?

No, but I work with lots of different little kids in this age range every week. I deal with over 2000 different little kids a year and I have to keep control of those kids in a potentially dangerous situation.

There is NOTHING you can tell me that will convince me a young child should be dragged from his home in hand cuffs in the dead of night. That the government has THE RIGHT to traumatize a child in this manner when no law was broken.

Do not allow the child to go back to school - sure.

Require psychiatric examination by a different state appointed doctor -sure

Traumatize the child and parents when a psychiatric problem is already KNOWN to exist - HELL NO!

I have had a frantic neighbor, new to the neighborhood, ask me to take her to school to pick up her child who was behaving a Heck of a lot worse than this kid - setting fire to her desk, to be exact. I then took her and the child to her psychiatrist. Why the heck wasn't the same method applied here?

Ah, well yes I think this kid does need some serious help, preferably from a teacher or parent or even a therapist at this point, but having an eleven year old kid arrested for a simple drawing goes way beyond the reasonable grounds for an arrest. The cops used unnecessary force in dealing with this matter.

The police should have talked to the boy instead of full on arresting him, or perhaps giving the parents the number of a good therapist to call. The arrest probably scarred(and scared too) the kid more then it did help him.

DOWN WITH SEPERATISTISM!!

I repeat, do you have any other evidence about this story, yes or no? You don't do you? You are reacting to a story without having the full facts, are you not?

This saddens me. I have ADD as well, and many situations where people just do not understand me.

Here we have a kid, who has known problems and shows a completely normal behaviour for a ADD-kid.
Sure he has the need to talk about his situation, what he feels right now, why he feels like this, and what can be done, to make his situation better.

And the professional and trained teachers solution is to call in the cops, and they, obviously not very deescalative, handle the situation even worse -- SAD.

And imagine how the boy must feel !! He s most probably gonna be disturbed for the next 2 weeks.
Not very helpful.

Crimvelvet posted the way to handle it; (and its the easiest way as well, for all participants):

The correct way to handle it is for the parents, school and perhaps the authorities to sit down and TALK! The kid did not kill or harm anyone.

HERE ARE THE FACTS:

If the child chronically disrupted class and was a major problem the school and cops would have said so but "A juvenile assessment report shows he's never been in legal trouble before and is at low risk to reoffend."

hey told her they were arresting him and then handcuffed him and hauled him away in a patrol car. His mother says she begged police to let her drive her son to the police department and to let her stay with him through the booking process but they refused.

They put him in a cell, took his mug shot and fingerprinted him. He says he thought he was going to jail and would never be able to go home again.

According to the police report, "Tim" explained he made the drawing to release anger and would never hurt teachers or anyone. At first school officials did not want to press charges, but changed their mind when police called them later that night. A juvenile assessment report shows he's never been in legal trouble before and is at low risk to reoffend.

He's charged with a third degree misdemeanor, interfering with staff and students at an educational facility. The system says it's doing what's in the best interest of the child. But Tim's therapist says handcuffing an 11-year-old and putting him in a cell over something like this is "quite an overreaction" and does much more harm than good. www.kdvr.com...

...Finished with the drawing, he was about to throw it out, when it was seen by his teacher. The boy was sent to the principal's office, but the school was aware of his condition and that appeared to be the end of it, his parents said....

A police report indicates "Tim" admitted to drawing the picture, but insisted he would never hurt anyone, especially a teacher. He had never been in any kind of legal trouble before.

He was charged with interfering with staff and students at an educational facility, a third degree misdemeanor.

"It's bizarre to me that they would behave this way," Dr. Patrick Bacon, the boy's therapist....
www.nydailynews.com...

No where in any of the news stories is there any indication that this kid, screamed, yelled, kicked, bit. hit, sassed or did anything except draw a picture as his therapist told him to.

So why, wasn't this child handled the way my town's school system handled a much worse situation. Incidents that included, the setting on fire of a desk, screaming, yelling, kicking, biting and hitting. The result of a conference between the school, mother and therapist was that Tanya was placed in a special school with people trained to handle her type of problems.

It's an elaboration of the same news story. Where is the official response from the police? Where is any context on the 'interference' the child made to teachers and other students? Nowhere. So how do you know if this situation was 'less worse'? You don't, do you? You, me, everyone on here doesn't know any facts apart from what this tabloid has published. Sorry, nothing personal, but without all the facts any judgement is pre-empted based on emotion.

The charge was "He's charged with a third degree misdemeanor, interfering with staff and students at an educational facility. "

If, as was indicated the boy ONLY drew a picture, tossed it in the waste bin and there was no other unusual behavior, that school could be in deep kimchee, especially if the boy's therapist testifies that the child was "DEEPLY TRAUMATIZED" by the event.

After this news story I am sure the Ambulance Chasers are out in force competing with each other for who get a big piece of the pie if the parents decide to sue.

I am sure the turkey that made this idiotic decision is having nightmares about a huge lawsuit against everyone and everything in sight.
