While it's too bad they were killed , everyone has known for several years that Somali murdering pirates have been operating up to 500 miles from the coast and huge cargo and oil ships know where the military is at all times for escort , defense or rescue . A little sail boat off the Somali coast ... brain dead and now all dead . Those guys take over tanker ships with crew served heavy machine guns , RPG's and assault rifles so knocking over a sail boat isn't even work . I hope the pirates get blasted out of the water but these people were the authors of their own misfortune and it's Darwin Award time .

As a sailor, I find this news to be very troubling. Sadly, they were headed for some dicey waters on their way to the Suez Canal and on to Crete. but the spirit of adventure is what motivated these folks. They had been on this adventure since 2002. I find this quote from their site to be a little chilling

Djibouti is a big refueling stop. I have NO idea what will happen in these ports, but perhaps we'll do some local touring. Due north is the Red Sea where we plan to tuck in when winds turn to the north.

This fueling stop is just North of and adjacent to Somalia.

I've been following their trip for a couple of years now. God bless their souls.

I would have put it a little less hard as that but basically I totally agree.

It's been a no no for years, apparently these were people of faith, sadly misguided this time...

I also agree that just because they were Americans makes them any different, these scum bags kill ANYONE, being an American is a big plus for them so really beggars the belief why 4 Americans would sail past a country that HATES them so much BUT their lives are just as sad as any other nations losses.

What will Obama do, nothing.....With his clear leaning towards the Muslim way of life no doubt he will count this as just collateral damage...

What a sad ending... Since two of the pirates were already dead, I'm wondering if one of the hostages managed to wrestle a gun away from a pirate and kill two of them before being out numbered? Either way, I can see them interrogating the captured pirates and the special forces being called in to clean up the mess.

I am not in front of a tv but it is probably a failed hostage rescue. I doubt that the pirates would kill their hostages on a whim as they represent ransom money. Either way....we need to send in the Marines like we did against the barbary pirates in tripoli years ago. Wipe out their camps. Somalia is a failed state....we dont need their permission.

Well, if that's the case, then might as well fire on the boat and sink the thing. Take out who ever is left on the boat, and destroy it to eliminate any possible profit.

Basically homie. Somali pirates are known to operate in that area and those folks on that yacht broke off from the protection of the main body. I'm not saying what happened is justified or even good, what I am saying that is folks need to consider the dangers of where they go and what they do, especially when your in waters where pirates are.

I hope this sheds light on the reason why many of those pirates, who are converted fisherman, are resorting to this kind of life.

I think the best thing-and quickest. Would be for the boaters to be armed better than the pirates.

If you want to play in the big pool with the big boats.... bring big guns.
