I am a passerby on this site and read from time to time to see what the latest conspiracies are and found an interesting post about the Future Combat Systems the army is developing. Well did a little more digging and found an additional site to back the claim up. I think this will answer the discussion on the future usefulness of tanks and the feasibility of the new technology they were talking about. So here it is and enjoy.

www.globalsecurity.org
FCS will, over time, replace the current fleet of 'heavy' vehicles - the Abrams tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles with a new family of manned and unmanned ground vehicles and aerial vehicles. The new manned ground vehicles will be both lighter and smaller than the current fleet. Accordingly, the FCS family-of-systems maximum essential combat configuration weight will be 19 tons. This facilitates both rapid strategic (inter-theater), multi-modal (air, land, and sea) deployment and operational (intra-theater) maneuver by assets similar to C-130 profile aircraft. These lighter, smaller vehicles are designed to fit into a C-130-like plane, which allows them to be flown to a conflict anywhere in the world in 96 hours, rolled off and ready to fight.

Are they crazy taking out heavy tanks and heavily armored vehicles from our troops, look in Iraq a single rpg can take out a humvee what about if we don't have any tanks and the enemy has plenty of rpg's and what are our troops going to do when the enemy has a heavy tank but we don't. This is the biggest mistake the pentagon has ever made in my mind taking all of the heavy armor

i hear that America is going to have only some parts of it's army using this light weight rapid force, their job will be to make a breach head for the heavier tanks and troops that take longer to get there

This is not new news. If people actually kepted up on defence facts they would know that this information has been out for years. The Stryker is an "interm" vehicle until the FCS is ready.
