MDMA, the active ingredient in the drug Ecstasy, has been reviled as a menace and even a killer. Now some therapists claim it can help light the way out of a traumatic past.

Surprised to see Oprah of all people coming out with something like this. This really isn't new news at all as MDMA has been used on terminal cancer patients -> PTSD for quite a while.

Just more or less though it was interesting that Oprah decided to run this. The article even goes into detail about the garbage .gov studies in the early 90's. This is akin to the E-Rising Documentary put out by ABC I believe it was quite a while ago. You can find that documentary online as well if interested. It is very good, IMO.

Yes.

Potassium Cyanide.

Or in the case of cancer, try MMS-2.

Should have guessed it was an Oprah thing with the "change your life" part of the title. She is always claiming to have found something or other that will do that.

Nevertheless, the article was a good one. Obviously if so many kids took this stuff to "feel good" it must have a legitimate application for people who "feel bad" in a serious, diagnosable way.

Looks like a good connect to me between a serious need and a legitimate therapy.
Presumably, if this becomes an acceptable treatment there should be a greater supply of clean/actual MDMA available instead of the mixed up God knows what that they sell on the streets -- hopefully with reduced risk along with it.

Yeah, well the article was pretty good. The only part was at the end where the "user" broke down crying at the end of her "experiment" - which IMO probably is due to her deeper psychological issues. Never personally ever seen this happen.

From what I understand the sassafras oil is the major factor in the production of good available MDMA towards more public black market outlets. Apparently this has become harder and harder to come by. Realistically, 2-3 / 10 publicly available "stamps" (if you will) are good / clean while the rest are mostly either straight up fake or heavily adulterated.

In the movie I was referencing in the OP (E-Rising) there is a woman on the Donahue show from the late 80's that said she used MDMA as a therapy (terminal cancer). It has been known for quite a while that this works. But the government wasn't going to allow people to just get away with not paying your dues on any drug that is popular.

The MDMA by itself isn't going to cure anything - it needs to be taken in conjunction with professional therapy. There are plenty of clubbers who have problems, have taken MDMA, and they still have the same problems the next day.

Like almost all psychoactive drugs, set & setting are the key component to the "results" of the experience.

This is a HUGE barrier to MDMA's acceptance as a therapeutic drug. Many people have had unpleasant if not harmful experiences on "ecstasy", and when they hear "ecstasy" is being considered for therapy, think back on those crappy nights and think "no way that is legit". It's hard to imagine how screwed up polls regarding MDMA use/effects may be considering how rare actual MDMA is these days. Polls just cannot accurately judge usage and effects of a drug because of the lack of real drugs being sold!

Not to mention that when most people roll, they drink a few beers as well - god knows how many potentially great life-enriching trips have been utterly destroyed by alcohol...
