Canada hit by cyberattack from China computers: report

OTTAWA (Reuters) - The Canadian government was hit by an unprecedented cyber attack from Chinese-based computers last month that penetrated two key economic ministries, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp reported on Wednesday.

The CBC cited sources as saying the hackers broke into computer systems at the Finance Department and Treasury Board. Once the attack was detected, Internet access in both ministries was cut off.

What is going on in China. Why are they trying to get Canadian Gov't info from our computers. I wonder how much info they downloaded before our side figured it out? Of course the Gov't is not going to tell us that. It seems like there has been a lot of hacking going on lately. It makes me wonder what China has up it's sleeve. Our finance minister is going to a summit or meeting soon and the finance guy from China will be there, I wonder if anything will be said. Any thoughts.

as easy as it is to lump the story as 'china hacks canada' its not usually that simple. who in china? why? what we're they after? one would assume something to do with cash I guess...or maybe something else?

there is also the possibility that someone used a proxy to make it LOOK like it came from china. learned that one from the film 'phone booth'.

China has a cyber warefare division with more staff then the US army has troops. It's not hard to figure out that they are wagging a war that no one else wants to call them on because it would mean a hot war if we did.

They are looking for the secret to Canada's Maple syrup!
So the big question is, what is the US trying to sell Canada and will the Cannuck leaders buy into it again?

An unprecedented cyberattack on the Canadian government also targeted Defence Research and Development Canada, making it the third key department compromised by hackers, CBC News has learned.

The attack, apparently from China, also gave foreign hackers access to highly classified federal information and also forced the Finance Department and Treasury Board — the federal government's two main economic nerve centres — off the internet.

Defence Research and Development Canada works to assist in the scientific and technological needs of the Canadian Forces. It is a civilian agency of the Department of National Defence.

Probably mostly about resources and finances. We're resource rich, and our economy did better than other countries, during this global recession. Economically, we're well managed, and regulated.

Juneau-Katsuya said he believed Canada is seen by China as "a land of opportunity to get natural resources that they need so, so much."

China has some partnerships in the oil and gas industry, and the more they learn about our economy and business, the stuff that isn't public, the easier it would be for them to try to do hostile takeovers of our resource companies. They also import a lot of our potash.

The public didn't even know about this until now, and yet they were able to get a portion of our government "off the internet". Now, why does Obama need a "kill switch"?
