When the quake in the late 1800 / early 1900 hit, it was so powerful church bells as far away as boston rang from it. The Mississipi river actually
flowed backwards for some time as well till it sorted itself out again. The ground near new madrid mo is some type of sand mix. When the last quake it
they had sand plumes shooting up, and they can still be found today when digging in those areas.
Their are extensive cave systems all over arkansas / missouri. The network is pretty large, with one segment starting in Northeast oklahoma and
stopping just outside St. Louis.
I wouldnt be suprised if there is a larger fault line that got missed.
